We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Wealthi Freeman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Wealthi, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I can honestly say that I absolutely enjoy being a business owner. Even though there are ups and downs that come with ownership, I can’t imagine not having my business now. It’s never been the thought of what it would be like to just have a regular job, simply because I’ve worked while creating and running my business. My job has been the funds for my business along the way. So my end goal is for my business to expand so much, that one day I won’t have to work a regular job. This is my thought everyday. I see myself with a small or decent size space or building and my business thriving.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Wealthi Freeman, born and raised in Atlanta, Ga. I am the creator and owner of A Rich Taste. A Rich Taste started out as being known for it’s Jarr’d Treats (Desserts) until last year when I decided to expand to cooking and catering.
I created my business from a thought I had at work one night. I was working overnight doing security and was sitting talking with a coworker. We were discussing not having to work a normal job for too much longer and she was like, “why don’t you start a business baking?” I was like, “I could…..” but that was it. She went on to explain and give tips on how I could be different and stand out from other bakeries. I then took the thought/idea to my husband and he was all for it. In fact, he agreed to sponsor my start up as long as I stayed focused and promised never to give up.
Here we are three (3) years later, still standing. I went from only selling jarred desserts, to meals, meal preps, whole cakes, pies, and even catering when inquired about. I am beyond thankful and grateful for all of my clients. What am I most proud of? I am proud of how far I’ve come in three years with much more to accomplish. In these three years, I’ve had a son, endured a pandemic and still managed to stay afloat. I am proud of how I was able to expand my menu from only being dessert.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Funding my business….. There I was with the idea and excited about it. Then I started to think about all I would have to purchase, the fees for filing the paperwork to get started. I was sitting in the kitchen on my laptop doing some research, and my husband walks in and is like, “I’ll give you the money to start your business. I pay your start up cost; but you have to stay focused. You can’t give up or quit when it gets hard or when you don’t make the sales you want to. You have to stick to it. I believe in you.” This meant so much to me. I wasn’t expecting the response I got from him but it was everything to me. My Husband has truly been my number one fan and supporter.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I had to learn to interact more on social media. I began to post more than ever. I would post me baking and cooking. Before, during and after videos and photos were a major help. Anytime I decided to have a sale or make a change to the menu, I would post. Then there were my family and friends who would repost to their audience and I would simply repost their post.
