We recently connected with We Don’t Ride Llamas and have shared our conversation below.
We Don’t Ride Llamas, appreciate you joining us today. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
Mr. Rami Malek is a very busy man. He has toured as a drummer world wide. He makes drum heads for living, has a loving family, and is adept at voice training. He’s the reason why we are so adept at songwriting. He challenged us to write a song every day and send it to him. Each time we sent a song, he gave us pointers. Just because he believed in our craft and ability to create. He gave Max pointers on how to sing from their diaphragm, helped Chase with melody skills and gave the band as whole discipline in writing music. We are extremely grateful for the time he invested in our band.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Formed in 2014, in the heart of Austin, Texas, emerges We Don’t Ride Llamas [WDRL], a dynamic, alt Afro Punk band on a mission. Born from the fusion of diverse musical influences and a shared commitment to racial and social justice, this band of siblings transcends mere entertainment, using their music as a catalyst for change.
At the forefront stands Max, the charismatic frontman, whose impassioned and nuanced vocals lead the charge. Blake (Drums), Kit (bass) and Chase (guitar) each bring their own inimitable style and impressive skill, weaving a tapestry of sound that blends infectious rhythms with the raw energy of rock.
Drawing inspiration from musical legends like JDilla, Bob Marley, Living Colour, and Jimi Hendrix, WDRL’s electrifying performances captivate audiences and ignite a spirit of solidarity. Whether they’re rockin’ out at ACL, opening for Hiatus Kaiyote or showcasing their skills on tour with Courtney Barnett, the band’s presence is felt, their message resonating with all who listen.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The best thing society can do to support a thriving creative ecosystem is invest in their local creative scene. Supporting your local bands, buying merch, teaching skills that may be necessary to further develop an artistic career, supplying transportation, monetary support, and/or just spreading information about their endeavors.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Our mission is to create a safe space and real community through our music but also our live events. Especially for black, trans, queer, alternative people! We write the music we do to not just tell stories but also to proactively reach towards a better world to live in for all us.
