We were lucky to catch up with Wawi Amasha recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Wawi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Taking the leap to pursue a career as an artist after graduating with a degree in Public Relations in 2003 was a significant risk for me. Despite the pressure from my family, who valued the security of traditional career paths, I felt a deep calling to follow my passion for art.
The decision was not easy. I knew little about the art world and was uncertain about the challenges I would face. However, the pull towards creativity and self-expression was too strong to ignore. I believed that by pursuing my passion, I could find fulfillment and make a meaningful contribution through my artwork.
In taking this risk, I had to overcome doubts and fears about financial stability and societal expectations. It required courage and determination to pursue a path that diverged from the conventional norms.
Ultimately, the risk paid off. Despite initial skepticism, I found success and fulfillment in my artistic endeavors. Over the years, I have honed my skills, established myself within the art community, and created meaningful connections with audiences around the world. While the journey had its challenges, embracing my passion for art has brought me immense joy and a sense of purpose that I wouldn’t have found otherwise.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a self-taught artist with a journey that spans over two decades. It all began in the summer of 2003 when I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, ready to dive into the corporate world. However, after several job interviews, I realized that this path didn’t resonate with me. Instead, I moved to a small studio in Santa Monica, seeking a livelihood aligned with deeper meaning and purpose.
It was during this time that I met a fellow artist in my building, whose work captivated me. Encouraged by his creativity, I began painting scenes from my homeland in Kenya, drawing inspiration from my upbringing and the vibrant culture around me. When a local shop owner saw my paintings, she offered to display them, and they quickly sold out. This moment affirmed my calling to pursue art full-time.
Since then, I’ve immersed myself in creating art that celebrates African culture, particularly focusing on the stories of African women and the harmonious relationship between people and nature. Using acrylics, ceramics, and digital mediums, I’ve developed a unique style that intertwines personal experiences with ancestral wisdom and African proverbs.
My journey as an artist has led to numerous gallery shows, commissions, and features in magazines and television shows. Today, my goal is to share the rich tapestry of African culture with the world, preserving its essence for future generations. Through resilience and dedication, I’ve forged my own path, staying true to my roots and the stories that define them.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal to create a sustainable center that serves as a cultural resource hub for conscious art, fair trade, and permaculture is truly inspiring. It reflects a deep commitment to community, sustainability, and the preservation of cultural heritage. By providing a space for people to come together, exchange skills, and learn about traditional crafts, permaculture, and herbalism, I’ll be fostering a sense of connection and empowerment.
This mission not only aligns with my personal values but also contributes positively to the broader community by promoting environmental stewardship, cultural preservation, and holistic well-being. It’s clear that my creative journey is driven by a desire to make a meaningful impact, both locally and globally, by creating a space that nurtures creativity, sustainability, and community resilience.
As I continue to manifest this vision, I remember that every step I take towards its realization brings me closer to creating a space that not only reflects my values but also inspires others to live more consciously and harmoniously with nature and each other.
