We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Waves The Rapper. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Waves below.
Hi Waves, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Music has always been a HUGE part of my life. From hard rock to metal. From 80’s pop to oldschool country music. From HipHop to Irish Drinking Tunes. I left no stone unturned, so to speak. But it all really started with poetry. I started writing poetry when I was about 11 years. Not long after that I started getting into hiphop. In 1995, Bone Thugs N’ Harmony released their record “East 1999 Eternal). When I heard that album it was a wrap. I knew that’s what I wanted to do. So, my poetry slowly transformed into verses. I would practice 24-7. Hell, I still do. If you were to see me on the street, there’s a very good chance that I’m rehearsing some rhyme in my head that I can’t seem to get rid of.
Waves, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Independent, underground HipHop artist here. I released my first full-length album in February 2024 (Barely Human). You can find it on all streaming platforms. I have 2 more full-length LPs loaded and ready to go. Taking my time with them. I also really enjoy making lo-fi hiphop music. I’m always looking to collaborate with other artists. I don’t care what genre you fall into. I think the best thing any creative person can do is to step outside of their box from time to time. Push your limits and try to peer into your craft from another angle. You may just surprise yourself. And after all, any form of creativity has to start from within. It has to be for YOU. If others dig it, then great! If not, then it still served its purpose.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes. My main goal is to become a full-time artist. I don’t care to be rich or wealthy or famous. I just want to replace my income. I have a wife and 5 sons and work a full-time job while trying to keep this dream alive. If I could get myself into a position where I could survive and provide for my family with music then I would be the happiest man this side of the Cumberland River.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
There is a lot that can be done. This interview, for instance. Having local organizations that are willing to spotlight lesser or unknown artists/musicians/businesses. It goes a long way actually. You know, I’ve always thought it curious how the vast majority of people are so willing to throw massive amounts of their hard earned money toward big businesses, corporations, artists and musicians. I mean, if you enjoy the services they provide then by all means go support them, but I think a lot people would be surprised to find out the caliber of talent and passion that is right down the street or in the next city over. You may never hear their music, but they are making it anyway. Waiting for you to find them. SUPPORT LOCAL!
