We were lucky to catch up with Warren Sawyers II recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Warren thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
One of the most meaningful projects to me is the album that I just released January 5th titled Dinero. The reason is because it is the first album that I not only produced but wrote as well. Artist that are involved with my group Top Flight The Brand are also included as well.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I grew up Warren Sawyers II born and raised in Nashville Tennessee. I Graduated from undergrad in Mass communications with a focus in marketing at Tennessee State University. At the luxurious University I also received my Masters in Business Administration. As a youth I’ve always had a deep passion for music. I can still remember living in Antioch Tennessee when my parents bought my first toy drum set. My father was in a band and had a home studio, I loved to go in there and play on his keyboard.
Around the age of 5 or 6 I still can remember him cutting on the microphone and me singing Michael Jackson’s I’ll be there and surprising my mother and sister. Me being shy at a young age kept me from truly getting into singing. Though I had a passion for R&B listening to 112, Usher, and Aaliyah my love for rap started to grow as well. My big cousin rapped, as we got older and it inspired me to write also. I became a 50 cent fan at the age of 8 and loved the album The Massacre when it first came out. Later my overall inspirations would be T.I. , Lil Wayne, and all time favorite artist Drake.
In the fourth grade I even performed with a few of my best friends on stage during 3rd and 4th grade lunch. To this day I still remember my first rap and it’s resemblance to 50’s flow. After Elementary school I would continue to write raps on and off. In high school my mom bought me a Blue SnowBall microphone and a Macbook so I even recorded a few songs on GarageBand. My first beat that I ever made was actually on there too.
With the help of a few mentors I learned a lot about music and different ways the industry works. Even though I wrote, my goal always was to figure out how to make beats. So after college I bought FL studio 20. It was difficult at first but during the 2020 pandemic I gradually started to learn through watching YouTube videos and utilizing resources like Splice and Arcade that make it easier today for beginners. Shortly after I would get my own at home studio set up and one of my best friends/fraternity brother (Abu da Don) would come over for fun to write and record songs. Shortly we both soon realized that this would become more than just fun.
His brand that started off as representation of many different ideas also became a part of music. That’s when we came together as Top Flight The Brand to form a small music militia to support each other and stay dedicated to our work. We continue to build our brand, perform at shows, and put out music videos. Our greatest common denominator is the passion we all have for creativity and music.
I now upload music to Beat Stars and Youtube under Warren Kashh. My Album “Dinero” is available on all streaming platforms as well!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most important and rewarding feeling to me is creating music that inspires others and makes them emotionally feel good. It drives me to get feedback from another artist that mentions my music helps keep them going. That is why it is important for me to create something new everyday.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Distant acquaintances or fiends may not understand that I have been writing music since youth. I also was involved in the band in middle school and took little piano lessons as well. Although I play most of my music by ear, I hope to continue to improve and provide an industry quality sound.
