Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Warren Pettey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Warren, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
The first dollar I made as a pianist was earned at my local hospital at 8 years old. My parents used to take me to the piano in the lobby to practice performing live and I was paid in tips and a $5 ticket to the cafeteria. I still have my first $1 tip although I have a feeling my dad had a stranger put in his dollar bill to encourage me – I wasn’t very good at the time.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Warren Pettey, specializing in synthesis, production, and sound design. My passion lies in collecting unique gear, exploring their sonic capabilities, and pushing them to their limits. Whether I’m working on my own music or collaborating with an artist, you’ll often find me immersed in the studio. Mixing is a particular passion of mine, driving my constant search for exceptional tones and innovative sonics.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Embracing a career in music, particularly in LA, offers the prospect that each day unfolds uniquely. The dynamism inherent in the music industry resonates with me, as I love avoiding monotony. Whether I’m immersed in designing patches in a studio, co-writing tracks for an upcoming movie, or gracing the stage with live keyboard performances, the diversity of experiences fuels my passion. The constant variety keeps me motivated and sharp, a quality I value in this ever-evolving industry.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
My favorite book pertaining to music is Susan Rogers’ “This Is What It Sounds Like.”
