We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Wanda Rogers. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Wanda below.
Hi Wanda, thanks for joining us today. Please tell us about starting your own firm and if you’d do anything different knowing what you know now.
I had a dream where two other ladies were in it. However, when I spoke to them about the dream they didn’t get it. I realized they were worker bees and didn’t see the bigger picture that I saw. What I thought the dream was signifying was not correct, however, I did utilize all three of our initials when I did start the business. It turns out that those initials lead me to founding CSW Funding LLC, the parent company of the staffing agency I started in 2009 named Construction Service Workers. You never know the intend of a dream until you continue moving forward.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
One of our core values is integrity, it’s so important to stand for something or you will fall for anything. Which is why I have chosen for my business to look and operate differently in this industry.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Landed my first contract in 2015. This client approached me asking if they could refer the worker of choice to me because it was my first contract absolutely! What could happen? Right? Wrong! The first and second lessons I learned. It turned out that person was the family member of the person who requested that I hire this person. Remember integrity is my main focus. When I learned that this individual was using drugs and was never at the job site I would just pop up to see what was going on there. I found out the mother would sign the timecard forging his hours. After learning that his mother was doing this, I terminated the relationship. In addition, he was even coming to my office every Thursday requesting his paycheck even though payday wasn’t until Friday. The large construction firm couldn’t believe I would terminate the relationship. However, it meant more to me to be on the side of right, than to allow this firm to say how my company operated or to define who my firm was!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Trust people will be people. Sometimes they are here for just a reason or a season they are not meant to be with you as the company grows. I hired a lot of people and only three remain. People don’t want to really see you succeed they want to say they were a part of your success. However, you can’t claim what you didn’t earn.
