We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Wanda Miller. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Wanda below.
Wanda, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry? Any stories or anecdotes that illustrate why this matters?
Corporate America does not utilize the talents of black individuals in the publishing and advertising industry. And I’m speaking specifically from my people and culture’s perspective. As someone whose been interested in advertising for years, I see the industry act as more of a secluded club instead of an open inclusive area for those interested in learning and sharing their talents. They want you to have 3-5 years of experience coming in, which is understandable due to the accounts you work with however, given the opportunity we can acquire that same experience along with sharing our talents such as being creative and analytical thinkers as well as contributing communication skills to clients. The culture of America and its trends start with its most diverse culture. Us. Why would you want to gatekeep against that? Why not utilize those talents to benefit your business?
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
FoxHouse started as an entertainment company with vocal performances, and comedy shows and then it merged into publishing, copywriting, and advertising. I’ve always wanted to get into the publishing and advertising industry but companies weren’t picking up my skill set, so I decided to go into business for myself. I started educating myself on how to write manuscripts, novels, screenplays, and copywriting and then did contract work for other screenwriters, and diversity reading. I noticed there were those in my community who needed help publishing their own books. so I started helping them with their novels and memoirs being a ghostwriter, editing, proofreading and recently added in marketing and advertising. The most joy I find is seeing my client’s faces when they’ve reviewed their books from the front and back cover to the interior and knowing that I’ve assisted in creating something with them that they can be proud of. FoxHouse Publishing builds much-needed trust between our company, our clients, and our audience regarding the kind of books we publish, what manuscripts we take on, and how relevant they are to our community.
What sets us apart from everyone else is we are a one-stop shop for our authors. We take them from an idea to manuscript through the publishing process to marketing and advertising their products. And when we advertise your products it’s not the same old stereotypical tropes you see when it comes to our people; dancing for food, loud talking, rolling neck, no. We create an outstanding online presence that showcases your true talents so that your audience can see you and not a fallacious idea.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients is word-of-mouth and social media. Clients that have worked with me are telling their friends and family who are interested in publishing their books about FoxHouse and the ease of working with our business. Social media has also been effective in building our client list. Networking and answering questions about publishing through social media allows us to speak with potential clients and it also allows them to communicate their needs of what they’re looking for.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission for FoxHouse Publishing is to bring creativity and originality of authors, and digital books to an international audience. We want to build a reading culture around our community that recognizes education, talent and diverse voices that already shape our culture and society.
