We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Walter Stevenson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Walter below.
Hi Walter, thanks for joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
In my early stages, my mom always taught me about money. I can remember her showing me how to count money and how to pay bills. We would go to the bank together and I’d watch her sign documents and things like that. I’ve known our Bank Teller since I was about 7 or 8 years old. I’m 29 now. My mother graduated in Business and Finance and I followed in those footsteps while also learning Financial Literacy from today’s perspective. My mom is 67 so she didn’t get into things like trading stocks all of the apps and things weren’t available in those days.
Walter, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into music around the age of 5. I started out in the Church. Giving my talents back to God to show my appreciation was a must. I had to work for everything coming up. My mom never spoiled me and always made sure I understood the parental system. I started my first businesses in High School. I tried to do everything you could think of really. My school was somewhat supportive but I always felt like I was bigger than those hallways. I started ‘In The Hills, LLC’ shortly after my 26th Birthday.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn the way I viewed money. I wanted to view it as a tool like rich people. Use money to make more money.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
I just lived below my means. Stay down until you come up. Use the money you save to invest in yourself
