We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Walter “J.R.” Brooks. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Walter “J.R.” below.
Walter “J.R.”, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My mission is to inspire the next generation, and to let them know to “Pursue All Your Dreams.” I’ve been fortunate to be able to serve as a mentor to many of my students. In addition, I’ve also had 4 teenagers come to live with me at some point, and serve as the father figure that they never had. They now all call me dad, and I feel that I have been able to provide them with stability and opportunities that they needed at various times in their lives.
Walter “J.R.”, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve been involved in music since I was 2 years old, when I began playing drums. Since that time, I’ve been fortunate enough to attend the Merit Music Program in Chicago, Illinois to hone my music skills and expose me to various musical techniques and genres. My musical background sets me apart from other music producers, because I actually play multiple instruments, and I also play in church on a weekly basis. The same creativity and spontaneity I use in church services, assists me in being creative in the studio environment when developing various melodies and songwriting for artists. I provide various services to my clients which includes music production, songwriting, mixing, mastering, and film/tv scoring. The thing that I’m most proud of is that I’ve been able to do things my way, without having to compromise who I am. The thing I want potential clients, followers, and fans to know is that working with me is an experience that will ultimately bring your vision to pass.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
When it came to putting together the initial capital to start my business and buy my initial equipment I had a family member who was generous enough to open a credit card account at a music store and allow me to purchase equipment on it. I was able to pay on the equipment over time and once the card was paid off, I was able to put additional equipment on the card. This equipment gave me my start and allowed me to start producing and mixing professionally in my own studio. Since this time, that initial equipment has made me enough money to upgrade to better quality equipment which has allowed me to take on more and more projects.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
The thing that has helped me to build my reputation within the market is being genuine. One thing that people know about me, is that I’m an honest individual who will let you know exactly what I think. This has allowed people to trust what I say, because I’m not money driven and will be sure to tell you what you need to do in order to be successful. As a result, my clients tell others about me, and I always continue to grow and gain more clientele.
