We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Walter Holem a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Walter, thanks for joining us today. Do you manage your own social media?
In my business, I initially managed all asepcts of social media. This approach allowed me to maintain direct control over our brand voice and engage with our audience personally.
However, as my business grew, I realized that handing off some aspects of the content allowed me to prioritize time on larger ROI activities. The first thing I have handed off is the video editing aspect for social videos. After creating a standard template and standard of content – it can be fulfilled by team members.
The main lesson I learned is that you need to solve problems with systems; systems are key to allowing team members to deliver the standard of content successfully you can create yourself. Luckily, being in the content creation industry a lot of the content I share is already being created for a client or personality – so I have to manage how the content is best presented.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Born and raised in the Midwest, I am a South Florida & Cape Town-based self-taught photographer. My work is rooted in the spirit of timelessness. Known for blending themes of lifestyle, antiquity, & minimalism with a classic flair. My style is characterized as lively, enigmatic, and reminiscent of paintings.
I first discovered photography as a teenager documenting my friends, I went on to achieve a full scholarship to a public Ivy League university with a specialty in business & marketing, before venturing into a passionate career in photography. My goal is to create content that inspires people to explore, learn, and create.
I am trusted by globally recognized brands and world-champion athletes to bring their vision to life.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Absolutely. One resource I wish I had known about earlier in my creative journey is the immense value of creating content across various platforms.
Understanding this earlier on would have helped me realize that expanding my reach beyond a single platform not only draws wider engagement but also frees me from the constraints of platform-specific trends, or supported format.
This approach encourages the development of a unique style, allowing for more creative freedom and the potential to truly stand out.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson I had to unlearn was the belief that videography is more lucrative than photography. Initially, I pursued videography under the impression that it would yield higher returns.
However, I discovered that if I focused on honing my skills in photography, I could achieve a higher ROI. With genuine passion for photography – it allows me to complete projects more efficiently and at a higher level of quality.
This realization shifted my career path, leading me to dedicate myself more towards to mastering photography, which has proven to be both financially rewarding and personally fulfilling.
