Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Wahaj, Aman, Danish. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Wahaj, Aman, Danish, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, folks often look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight – but that often obscures all the nitty, gritty details of everything that went into the growth phase of your business. We’d love to hear about your scaling story and how you scaled up?
As of September 2022, we have been in the creative world for five years! Over this time, we’ve had to learn not only how to scale the business but also when to pivot so we can remain relevant.
In the first six months of our journey, we needed to build our portfolio and offered free shoots to close friends and family. This allowed us to practice and more importantly fail so we could learn and prepare for future shoots with people we did not know and who would be paying us for our services. We began with smaller shoots with 1-2 people in the frame (graduations, couples, etc.) and slowly made our way up to families and small events.
Fast forward to 2020, we had a better understanding of our strengths and were preparing to enter the wedding market when the pandemic hit. This was a blessing in disguise because we realized we still had much to learn so we took the year to rethink our strategy and focused on our niche instead. During 2020 and 2021, we gained extensive experience second shooting with established photographers who allowed us to hone our skills and understand the mechanics of the wedding industry.
In 2021, we knew that in order to become more mainstream, we would need to offer videography in our packages. By the end of 2021, we began photo/video packages so as to fully cater to our clients and provide them greater value than before. This required us to buy new equipment and learn how to storytell with a moving frame instead of a static one. While we were moving fully ahead in the wedding industry, we also started tiptoeing into the small business space by offering specialized sessions to allow us to diversify a little more.
This year has allowed us to take everything we have learned so far and apply it to varying clients while progressing in our own passions. It hasn’t been easy but the journey has been very fulfilling.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Chromalogue Studios began as a passion project where one of us decided he wanted to learn photography and learn how to edit pictures because he is colorblind. Although photography was a passion, he never really thought about creating a business around it until he spoke to some of his friends and they all said they wanted to join him on this journey. In the beginning, we all just wanted to work together and learn a new skill and slowly that turned into a much greater endeavor as we scaled up and started calling ourselves part-time photographers.
Although we all come from different professional backgrounds, we all enjoy capturing moments and providing joy to others through our work and now we had an outlet for that! Being friends since high school only helped us create a tighter bond as we could give each other constructive feedback without thinking twice on how someone may take it. Due to our varying strengths, we have also been able to help one another in different aspects so we can each improve our individual skill set.
Due to this camaraderie, we have ingrained this friendship into our brand and we think this is one of our differentiators amongst our peers. Additionally, we like to heavily collaborate with our clients in various capacities. Granted we have the gear and the technique, it is still very important to incorporate the many wonderful ideas our clients have into the process.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
The first thing that comes to mind would be trust and faith from our clients. It was a different story when we were portfolio building and offering free shoots, but when you start charging for your services, it comes down to trust. We have had many clients over the years instill their trust and faith in our skills without seeing an example of what they have asked us to shoot (wedding, engagement, products, etc.).
Honesty would be the second thing that comes to mind. Being honest in our methods, our communication, and our personas comes a long way and we can most definitely attribute our success to being transparent with our prospects and our clients.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It has to be the satisfaction of seeing your work making someone else happy! Sometimes in your job, you may not get to see a direct impact of your role but here you have a direct impact on someone’s happiness once they see the pictures you shot or the video you produced. Along with that, it’s really uplifting when you see your own work from a few months ago, and you see improvements. It’s human nature to want to become better and to improve oneself and this venture allows us to grow in these facets.
