Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Voyo Popovic. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Voyo, appreciate you joining us today. Often outsiders look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight. Even media and especially movies love to gloss over nitty, gritty details that went into that middle phase of your business – after you started but before you got to where you are today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. Can you talk to us about your scaling up story – what are some of the nitty, gritty details folks should know about?
We were able to grow quickly by delivering an unmatched moving experience for our clients. Most businesses strive to be the best, and in an industry like ours, if customers are satisfied or thrilled with the level of service, they’ll let their friends and family know, post reviews online, and share their experience on social media. For longevity and authentic brand equity, you have to deliver a service or product that your customers love for your growth to last.
We are also constantly optimizing our processes and making improvements across our entire operation. It doesn’t have to be a customer facing process either, the entire machine needs to be efficient. A good example of this is our process and workflow in dealing with customer claims or feedback. Given the physical act of moving, accidents can happen. We have developed an internal process that allows us to promptly handle customer feedback and ensure they feel heard and any issue is resolved quickly.
Lastly, scale requires investment – you need to have enough manpower, inventory, and equipment to provide the services to match your customer growth. By constantly evaluating our business needs, we are able to predict and see patterns in the cost of customer acquisition and the capacity of each truck per day and month. Working backwards, we are able to make investments accordingly. It can seem daunting as it requires you to take the risk and to believe in the vision, and that’s one reason why the first about delivering an amazing service has been so critical to our journey

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I launched Piece of Cake Moving & Storage in December 2017 at the age of 24. I had moved to New York from Montenegro just a few years earlier and had been working in the moving and logistics industry in New York. I saw an opportunity in an old and traditional industry to improve systems, services, and the customer experience. I also wanted to create a workplace where people smiled – an environment and company that supported its people and valued their strengths and input.
With a single truck and the vision to become the largest and most loved mover in the country, in a few short years Piece of Cake has grown to a fleet of 300 trucks and a workforce of more than 600 people. Piece of Cake’s year-over-year revenue has more than doubled each year since 2018, making it the fastest growing moving company in the country, and last year we facilitated over 65,000 moves across the U.S.
We pride ourselves on our authentic customer experience and competitive pricing. Our services include: local New York tri-state area, South Florida, and Southern California moving services; long distance moving services nationwide; affordable, flat-fee guarantee pricing; comprehensive packing services; unrivaled customer support; federal and state moving accreditation; professionally trained and experienced movers; a safe, clean, and compliant truck fleet with GPS tracking; and a dedicated customer success team.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I mentioned this earlier, but it all comes down to delivering an exceptional customer experience so that your customers will refer and talk about your brand and service to everyone they know. It sounds simple, but it works. For us, encouraging our customers to leave a review online helps customers who are searching for our service feel confident that thousands of others have validated the service and brand.
There is no magic bullet to growing your business or gaining new clients, and you have to invest in multiple short and long term growth strategies to acquire new customers. We’ve found that investing in review platforms such as Yelp and in ad networks like Google and Meta have been hugely successful in growing our business as well.

Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
Piece of Cake is proudly the Official Moving & Storage Partner of the New York Knicks, making us the first moving & storage company to partner with an NBA team. It’s wild to think that the business was founded only a few years ago with zero outside investment and a single truck, and here we are six years later with the goal to become the largest and most loved mover in the U.S.
Last year, our Head of Marketing came to me with the idea that Piece of Cake – like the New York Knicks – represents the spirit of New York City. As a NYC headquartered company, we saw this as a great opportunity to further grow our brand equity alongside an iconic NYC institution.
Shortly thereafter, we’re at Madison Square Garden launching our partnership with the New York Knicks. To launch the partnership, we even shot some footage at MSG, an NYC institution in its own right.
