We caught up with the brilliant and insightful VOYAGR a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
VOYAGR, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Starting out as musicians, we all learned music and artistry different ways. But collectively, our biggest education came from playing with other musicians, both in the local scene and in the church. Playing with others and learning from them is so important, and that’s where we all met and have grown the most as musicians. Naturally, we all bring different styles and influences, but we do have similar listening habits, so collaboration comes naturally and we’re all kind of on the same page in that way.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
VOYAGR started out as a dream project for AJ and finally became a reality when Rachel and John expressed a desire to be apart of bringing some of the songs he had to life. ‘Oh Brother: https://open.spotify.
Our music is simple and meant to be accessible and relatable. There aren’t crazy chords or time signatures. Our music deals a lot with faith, relationships, and the seasons of life that tend to be the most disappointing. Our songwriting is very much a part of processing these tough feelings and emotions.
What do you find most rewarding about being creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is seeing people enjoy and truly relate to something you put so much work into. Because behind each song is a story we hope they can connect with. We’ve all spent a lot of time and effort on these collection of songs, so it’s an amazing feeling when people want to listen or request a song at a show. We’ve gotten so much great feedback on the EP thus far and we can’t wait until it’s out in it’s entirety.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
There’s a lot of challenges in being an indie-artist, especially in cities like ours that don’t have a flourishing scene. Word of mouth and sharing our music goes a long way, and we’re honored anytime some shares our music with their friends and family. And if you like the music, support it live!
