We were lucky to catch up with Voodo Fé recently and have shared our conversation below.
Voodo , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I love the ball in my hands with 3 seconds on the clock. The won’t always go in, yet I’ll never be afraid to take the shot. I’ve taken huge risk in business, relationships and personal decisions, yet the one that most important risk I’ve taken was deciding to quit drinking 10 years ago. I had my first drink at 12 and turned into a serious problem. It was connected to a fake confidence, fake self and fake version of me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Voodo Fé, the Harley-Davidson of the art world. I’m an edgy cat who loves raw, rough and distressed images. My creative company specializes in creating Brands, Art and Fashion. I’ve worked with the Miles Davis Estate, the Marley’s, the NFL and the NBA. We’ve placed art in the homes of the Obama’s, Janelle Monáe, Tiger Woods, Raekwon + Ghostface of Wu Tang and others.
Creating is like breathing, I can do this all day, yet you definitely don’t want me doing the books. I’m proudly dyslexic, which helps me focus on creating and not getting caught in a job I’d hate. I’ve only worked in the creative space.
What makes what I do different is that I’m not interested in anybody’s opinion, approval or pat on the back for my work. I just don’t care, yet I trust my inner thing-thing. It’s something special to be shown what the finish product is before starting… and it always shows up.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I’m a Haitian cat who comes from a Family of warriors. Tough wills, defiant spirits and a never quit mentality. I’ve had 10 surgeries, been hit by 3 cars on 3 different occasions and host an arthritic body that makes my bones break easier than usual (I’ve broken 4 bones this year). Yet one of the best examples I have of my resilience, was when I was in a band and we had a show in NYC. The show was going great until I broke my foot on stage, snapping the bone in half. We could have ended the show right there, yet I came to do my job. I got up, refocused and gave one of the best shows I’ve ever been apart of. You can’t scare me with pain.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For Me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is that it answers the question, ‘what would I do for free’.? And creating is the answer. That question and authentic answer will find what you love to do. I don’t need to get paid to make something, I’m going to create until I die… period.
