Vonte, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
in 2020, i wasn’t really working a stable job at all. like i’d work for a few weeks and quit because i never really liked working for other people, it’s just kinda convenient sometimes you know? so yeah i had a lil job then boom, covid hit so then i started getting unemployment and stuff so it was cool because i was getting paid & really just locking in with music 24/7 for like a whole year straight. i ended up getting like this refund check or something and it was like $1,000 so i moved to charlotte and stayed with some family friends who always were heavily into music too. i didn’t have a plan or anything. just to go up there and literally create and get outside in front of people and moving to charlotte was like the best choice i ever made. i met so many cool and down to earth people. i learned sooo much from moving on faith type thing. it ended up working out so much in the long run. til this day charlotte is one of the cities that give me the most plays yk? i’m still cool with just about everyone i met there too lol i also came across people like smino, mick jenkins, isaiah rashad & folks like that. those are people who heavily influence my style but yeah man moving off faith is definitely something i would suggest to folk because you never know how that one small move will impact your future.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
so boom im vonte & im from north charleston, south carolina. i’m a dope artist who style is nothing more than just groovy and easy to relate to. i got into making music on some being around and getting hella curious to the point of trying to make a song and it actually was easier than i thought & i honestly just fell in love with it since then. i’m not really a very open or vulnerable person either so music kinda helps me with that. i won’t be so open with you off of like conversation but listen to one of my songs and you’ll never guess some of things i’d be transparent about. i lowkey have a hidden talent of photography, videography, producing and a few more. this year im going to really push those gifts as well. i think what sets me apart from other folk is i really just be myself and stay that way. i won’t let anyone talk me out of being authentic, even if it’s not what folk wanna hear.. i still be myself. that’s something i’m very proud of too. even just getting on a stage and actually performing, being more hands on with my work is something that i’m proud of as well. alot people don’t do that anymore, im very proud of being the one who is producing my own stuff. i just want my listener, and even people who aren’t hip to my music to know that the best is yet to come. i haven’t put out my best music or even close to my best yet. i’m kinda taking my time more now with creating so it make take a lil longer but i promise it’ll be worth it. i’m working on a tape and some other things now!! i’m coming out with a clothing brand this year too to tie in with my indie label!! soonsoonsoon
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
honestly just being able to live free like now i still kinda work 2 jobs to support my needs and my music. i still record in my closet lol i want to be able to live off the fruits of my labor. i don’t wanna work for other people or like a job yk? i wanna create for a living and be able to help people who need me. it doesn’t even have to be any material things but a platform or whatever. i wanna be able to live and create without the hassle of not even wanting to go to work but still going because i got things i need to take care of lol just being free
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
i really had to unlearn this mindset of someone is gonna save you or someone is just gonna hand you something. you can be hella talented and have no work ethic, i can almost guarantee you that your career will not prosper how you think.
