We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Von Tae. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Von below.
Von, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
In 2019 I got rid of my apartment, sold all of my stuff and moved to Atlanta in the middle of the night. I was fed up with working my current job and felt as though Atlanta was the place I needed to be. I remember driving and praying to God that everything worked out when I got there. Unfortunately I ended up homeless for a few nights but I did end up getting a job to help support myself and that same job provided me with a place to live as well. In between performing, creating new content and networking, I used DoorDash to also bring in some income. After a few months the Covid-19 Pandemic started to hit hard and I ended up relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina which felt like a better place for me creatively. In Charlotte I ended up meeting some incredible creatives and released some of my best work. Moving out of my hometown was a risk that I had to take to push myself a bit more. I now feel like I can do anything!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Devante but I’m more known by my artist name Von Tae. I was born and raised in Calvert County, Maryland. I started singing at a very young age and professionally started recording in 2012. Since then I’ve been recognized by some of the entertainment industries biggest talents including comedy Luenell, R&B legend Kandi Burruss, Keyshia Cole, Tank, Success (A&R from Atlantic Records), Earl Johnson (Senior A&R from Roc Nation) and the list goes on. What makes me stand out from other artists right now is just creating music that doesn’t sound like everything you hear on the radio. A lot of artists don’t sing and rap equally as well either so that’s also a flex of mine! I’m most proud of my passion for success and creating a lane for myself to build a solid fanbase. I don’t wait for anyone to help with anything, I’m always researching and learning new ways to improve and challenge myself creatively.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love that music can cross all barriers. Regardless of who you are, music makes you feel good and can help you through some of your most darkest times. I love that I’m able to create music and receive messages from my fans saying, “thank you, I really needed to hear that.” Music is bigger than me, being famous or just doing it because I love it. It heals and creates some very special memories for the listeners as well as myself.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Persistence. That’s very important in this business. You have to keep pushing even when you don’t have all of the confidence or faith, especially when certain odds are against you. I’ve been fortunate enough to see the change in music releases for artists so I know how to really push my content. I post on all platforms and I’m very persistence with it. Being persistent helps you grow as an artist and it helps you to find your audience. I pay close attention to my analytics to see who’s watching and streaming the most. Building a social media presence requires dedication on the daily. Also, making sure to join in on challenges and what’s trending helps to get your content in front of more people. Don’t be afraid to seem “desperate.”
