We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Von Hubbard a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Von, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
There was a long period of time where I was just putting out albums and singles merely because I love the craft. From time to time I noticed I’d make a project to be performed or for commercial success. In all honesty it took the pandemic to help me refocus. Not having an avenue or outlet for creativity can be challenging. I know it was for me. During that time I did a lot of introspection and started making music that spoke to something. Whether it’s speaking to myself or speaking to those who are trying to find their way in life. I began making music with the intention of connection. No matter where you are in life or who you are there’s something in my music for everyone to connect to. When that connection is made, that’s when you see true love and longevity. That’s where the magic is. If my music touches one person a day, that’s fine by me because at the end of it all it’s for the fans.
Von, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve always had a love for music since I was around 10 years old. Starting out with piano lessons to later singing in the church (youth) choir. I was always doing something creative whether it be drawing, making music or putting together a short film. It wasn’t until 2012 that I decided to start making music when my brother and I made the rap group Young Notorious Goblins (YNG). After that the wheels were warm and my music journey was off. Since then I have released 3 mixtapes, 5 albums, numerous singles, and have performed well over 100 events with much more to come. All in all I will put it like this, if you want to know about my life, listen to my music. It’s all there.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Before I began recording and producing myself I ran into a hurdle or more of a reality check from the universe. I had reached out to a couple of people who I had become friends with or so I thought. When I asked about working together the response was not ideal to say the least. For my needs this was highly inconvenient as I was working on my album “Reflections”. In that moment I made a choice. I decided that I’m going to learn how to do everything myself. I wouldn’t have to worry about finding someone who could share my vision and make me sound how I should. I headed that up myself and it was the best decision for myself artistically.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
We need to be truly showing up for artists. Too many times I’ve seen artist have to put on a brave face to put themselves out there just to receive a pep talk from their team because of turnouts and/or engagement. I’ve seen people wanting the top tier artists and performers but forgetting that they have those same acts budding in their hometown.
