We were lucky to catch up with Volly recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Volly thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Learning and mastering my craft didn’t happen over night. When I started this career I was 13, had no idea what I was doing or even how to put a song together. But I’ve always been drawn to music, and having a creative mind. Over the years after I started, I would just write lyrics down. Even if it wasn’t a whole song. I continued doing this until I thought myself what song structure was and how to put a song together. I studied all the greats, from biggie and pac, to our modern day Juice WRLD.
I started off just rapping, tryna be in the same category as Eminem. I just never liked my rapping voice. I use to sing for fun growing up, but when I started adding melody to my music, and singing more than I was rapping, I found my sound. All the countless nights in the studio, all the songs I was making at a sub par level, was because I needed that change to my style.
Once I changed to the melodic rap music, I had to change my artist name. When I started out I called myself “Volume”. But when the change to my sound came, a new name came with it. That’s where Volly comes from today.
Ever since I made the change to how I made music, I’ve been doing nothing but level up ever since. Each song better than the last. My biggest focus now is learning the marketing game and how to push my content out there so people hear my music. I thank Voyage for giving me an opportunity to do so.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a 23 year old Artist out of Ypsilanti Michigan. I got into the music scene at a very young age, but I didn’t start recording and becoming an artist until 2017.
I provide an unmatched sound on the track. Whether it’s a single, or somebody wants a feature, I deliver every single time. I can’t think of any artist doing music at this time that is comparable to me. I’m authentic.
If you look at my catalog compared to others in my area, im completely different, in my own lane. Nobody I know of is doing what I do, not everyone can. I never tried to fit in somewhere I didn’t belong. I don’t ride waves, I made my own. I think that alone is what sets me apart from anyone.
My biggest accomplishment in my own career, was never giving up. I stayed consistent on my worst days. When I didn’t know how I was gonna make another song, or when I had self doubt, I never let it take me off the path that God put me on. He gave me a talent that I refuse to let go to waste. When it’s all said and down, my music and the talent I have is gonna be undeniable. I plan on taking over the world with my music.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
To me personally, the most rewarding part of being an artist is when someone tells me my music helped them in any way. Whether it be they got my songs on their gym playlist, or my heartbreak music got them thru a recent break up or loss. I started making music for me, but it’s a bonus when I make music from the heart that people can relate to. I got younger people that look up to me as well, so it makes me feel good that I can be a role model for the younger supporters
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I wanna give a life to my family that we’ve never had, and give my future children a better up bringing than what I been thru. I think the goal in most people’s life is relatable to that, but it hits different for me.
I got a God given talent, most people can’t make music like I do. My drive comes from knowing that as soon as Im in that spotlight, there’s no stopping me. I’ll be able to separate myself from the crowd and really stand out. That life I want for my family is within arms reach and I can feel it, I’ve said this for a while, but time WILL TELL.
