Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Vivian Thomas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Vivian , thanks for joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
I can’t pinpoint a single defining moment, but it felt more like a domino effect. I was born and raised in Colombia, South America, in a loving but financially struggling family. Feeling unsettled was normal, and constantly looking for what to do next became the norm.
When I finally made it to the US, I was utterly captivated by the city’s beauty, the organized traffic, the open spaces, and the strong scent of the sea. I fell in love with Miami, its infrastructure, and the vibrant environment. I felt settled and at home, away from home.
Finishing school as an international student was incredibly challenging, with the language barrier and the high expectations. However, graduation was non-negotiable. Walking up onto the stage, hearing my name called, and having a complete stranger congratulate me came as a shock, and I realized that I had truly accomplished it. At that moment, I own my space, my right to be here, I wasn’t just moving forward; I was actually getting somewhere and I became conscious of my capabilities to the extent that I allowed myself to dream of a future that I could solely own, with no sharing, no dependence – a future I could be proud to share

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
After moving to the United States in my late teens, I discovered my passion for science and working with people, which led me to become a Critical Care/Trauma Registered Nurse. I worked in the field for about a decade but was always eager to continue learning and serving the community in different ways. As a result, I went back to school to become an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. I had the opportunity to work in various great locations before eventually earning a Doctorate in Psychiatry and Mental Health. Building on my initial Master’s degree in Clinical Education, I later joined Nova Southeastern University as an adjunct professor.
Furthermore, I have been an active volunteer for several non-profit organizations, including Operation Smile and La Caridad Center. Inspired by their work and dedication, I founded the Sharing Hearts Foundation, a non-profit organization aimed at helping children in Colombia access education and school supplies.
Additionally, I have successfully established my own psychiatric practice. As part of the mixed-ethnic Hispanic community in the USA, I have witnessed the ongoing struggles and changes we all face. Despite these challenges, I am inspired by the determination and resilience of individuals striving to lead healthier lives, overcome past traumas, and build a brighter future. I believe I have the background, tools, and understanding to help make the American dream possible through hard work and dedication.
Every day, I strive to connect with people who are ready to embark on a new journey. I aim to engage in meaningful conversations about important topics in order to challenge common misconceptions that hinder our understanding of love and self-worth.
As a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, I established “Mergence Psychiatric Mental Health & Wellness LLC” to focus on treating mental health conditions, particularly personality disorders, anxiety, depression, and ADHD.
I have always been fascinated by the people around me. I have been a nurse for nearly two decades now and a Nurse Practitioner for about 10 years, working in several hospitals and outpatient clinics. Through my work, I have witnessed true happiness, suffering, and everything in between. I have always been curious about what motivates people, propels them forward, and what sometimes holds them back. I am interested in discovering what matters most to individuals and what they can live without.
Now, working in the outpatient clinic, I have the opportunity to observe numerous individuals dealing with sadness and anxiety, struggling to cope with daily life, and being unable to engage with the outside world. This experience has led me to explore even more ways to better understand the complexities of the mind. I take a holistic and collaborative approach to assist clients in achieving their health and personal goals.

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I firmly believe that passion, consistency, and humility are essential in addition to training. While I can only speak for psychiatry, it is not a typical or straightforward career. It demands a passion for exploring pain while consistently maintaining a professional yet compassionate approach. It’s important to rely on evidence-based practice and genuine knowledge to ensure a consistently effective and safe approach.
Finally it is crucial to have the humility to understand that not all individuals will improve under your care and to acknowledge that you may not be the right fit for everyone. It is not a defeats or attack to you personality. The ego must be put aside and the wellness of the client is priority.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
In addition to advertising in various locations, I strongly believe in authenticity and consistency. I always aim to offer excellent care while maintaining integrity and consistent principles while running my practice. This forms the foundation of effective strategies for growing and maintaining a well-balanced practice.
