We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Vivia Rowe a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Vivia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
Aesthetics is a billion dollar industry, with unlimited options available to our clients. Everywhere you look, products and services are advertised and sold. When a client chooses to visit a business for the first time, their decision is based on marketing or maybe even a referral. When that client decides to come back and become a regular client, they are choosing not just the service, but the provider.
One particular day, when I was still working at a large med spa in my area, a young woman came in for a consultation. She had been referred to the spa by a co-worker friend of hers. This new client wanted to discuss ways that she could slow down the effects of aging. Under normal circumstances, a consultation would last no more than thirty minutes, but she and I sat and talked for an hour. We talked about her skin and her concerns, but we also talked about who she is as a person. This conversation gave me insight about who she is, her lifestyle and how best to guide her to desired results. A trust was established, and that woman, her mother and two sisters are still my clients, eight years later.
People want to be heard and understood. They want their concerns to be validated and addressed. They want to be educated and included in the process of making improvements. People want to be empowered. Understanding that embarking on a journey to improve one’s appearance is an emotional task, made me even more empathetic and effective as a provider.
As a result of that in depth consultation, I now approach caring for my clients from a very empathetic standpoint. My appointment times are longer and more relaxed. I want my clients to have amazing results, but also an easy and comfortable experience. My goal is to make sure they leave their appointments informed and confident on what the next steps are in achieving their skin care goals. This approach has led to my success. I have more new clients through word of mouth recommendations, than any other form of marketing I’ve tried. A referral is the best compliment!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

There is nothing more satisfying than handing the mirror to client at the end of their service and seeing them smile at their glowing skin.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
If I could go back to the beginning of my career in aesthetics, I would not change one thing. There were definitely highs and lows, but time has shown me the importance of good and bad times.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
It is very important to stay abreast of the latest techniques and products on the market. If you know what is available, you can make the best recommendations. Even if your business doesn’t offer what the client needs, they will trust you and come back.
Besides staying savvy and up to date on the best services and products, maintaining a good reputation is key. Treat your clients well. Be ready when your client arrives and start on time. Never over-promise and under-deliver.
