We recently connected with Virginia Wilkens and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Virginia, thanks for joining us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
For my birthday about two years ago my best friend gifted me $2000 towards my business. Not only was the party surprise from my husband but the gift was the most thoughtful thing anyone has ever done to support my business. The fact that she saw enough of me too support me was amazing and I am forever grateful for her.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Well, I am a licensed dermatologist and make up artist they used to right here in Baltimore city. I’ve been doing my love since 2013! I provide on site and in studio services for weddings, photo shoots, and more. I am most proud of falling back in love with my gifts. For a while, I was only doing event hair and make up but I decided to change lanes and get back into the swing of things! I put up a post regarding looking for a space to consistently take care of my clients and a friend reached out directly in regards to her having a space at her salon. I checked it out and we talked and from there I started taking clients in her space. Currently, I offer hair, make up and waxing services at Salon D. Renee in downtown Baltimore.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
It’s funny, I can actually share a more recent time. After the pandemic started, I was forced to shut down my business temporarily. Due to the fact that no one was going to any events or doing any photo shoots, I was left with no work. I actually fell in love with the art of contact creation, creating videos and testimonials for companies to post on their social medias! It was a fun experience and I was able to use skills that I learned to create some awesome content for myself as well as some amazing companies!
Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?
So, I developed a wine allergy this past year. It was unexpected and one of the scariest moments of my life. I was drinking wine and socializing with my friends, and I started to feel dizzy. I went to the bathroom, and my face was bloodshot red and I could barely breathe! I was then rushed to the emergency room Where I was given Benadryl at a high dose and had to be monitored before I was able to be released. I still had to do an entire wedding the next day and my body took a big hit the night before. I’ve always had allergies, but this one was new and I’ve never almost died from an allergy, so this was one of the scariest things I’ve ever had to endure and my husband took it like a champ!
