We were lucky to catch up with Vira Magallanes Egli recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Vira thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
I love this question. I often bring up that my secret weapon or super power is having had the privilege of growing up in a loving, non-judgmental and nurturing home. Knowing that your family has your back no matter what you do makes you fearless. I know how lucky I am to have been surrounded by people that were rooting for me, desiring the very best without smothering me with expectation. My mom and dad did not have easy childhoods. We lived in my aunt and uncle’s home in Los Angeles. If the family struggled, the kids were not aware. Working as a unit, my family did everything they could to make sure the kids had a chance at “getting ahead.” I put that in quotes because it was up to me to decide what getting ahead meant.
My mom encouraged me to work hard and do the best I could and never judged me if I fell flat on my face. My dad pushed me to want bigger and better things than he ever had without losing a sense of where I came from.
When a human being is loved, listened to and encouraged, it sets that person free to create.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m an Insurance Professional. I grew up in a Mexican-Chinese household of immigrant entrepreneurs and one of the many businesses that my family had was an insurance agency. The funny thing about insurance is that once you get in, you very rarely get out. It is a recession proof, high energy, community-building, you-will-always-have-a-job industry that I am very proud to be a part of. I encourage young people to have a look at insurance.
I don’t just sell insurance. I oversee a software company that helps insurance agencies run their business. I host an insurance podcast. I consult for my brother’s agency and, with two of my dearest friends, I run an insurance agency that caters to content creators.
The retail side of insurance is actually quite diverse and it excites me to say that there are some badass female insurance agency owners that HANDLE THEIR BUSINESS.
So, the next time someone tells you they are in insurance, don’t judge. This industry will only keep expanding.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Networking. It’s still the best source. If it’s hard for you… well, you either need to get over it or you need to find your angle. What do you love doing? There are other people that also love that thing. Find those people on forums, meetups, ask your friends. You’d be surprised at just how big your circle already is.
How’d you meet your business partner?
I met my lovely co-founders at a networking event! I am not kidding when I say that networking is still one of the best sources of opportunity. Itzel, one of my partners, is a super social person. She brought Sandra, my other partner, along to an event I was hosting and that encounter led to a joint creation of yet another event that was a total success.
So that’s what we do now- keep coming up with fun projects that also generate $$$. Don’t forget about making money. I am not saying $$ should be your main goal. Your main goal should be bringing impactful, transformative value. When you fulfil a real human need, money flows your way and you deserve it. Don’t forget that. But that’s a whole other topic!
