We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Violet Guerrero-Ponce a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Violet , appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve had the privilege of working on revolves around my exploration of film photography. While studying photography, I delved deeply into the film photography process and sought to understand the true essence of creating an image, from capturing it on film to the tangible experience of printing it in the darkroom.
During various film projects, I immersed myself in the world of film photography, embracing the unique qualities and challenges it presents. I researched different film stocks, experimented with various camera formats, and honed my skills in exposure and composition. It was a journey of discovery and learning, where I found myself captivated by the process and the artistry that comes with shooting film.
The backstory to this project lies in my desire to reconnect with the roots of photography and embrace the craftsmanship that film demands. In today’s digital era, where images are instantly captured and easily manipulated, I wanted to challenge myself to slow down and truly understand the significance of each frame. I wanted to experience the anticipation and mystery that comes with waiting for the film to be developed, and the joy of holding a physical print in my hands.
Throughout this project, I dedicated countless hours to shooting on film, meticulously selecting and composing my subjects to create meaningful and intentional photographs. I would spend late nights in the darkroom, immersing myself in the chemical process, and witnessing the magic of each image coming to life. The tactile nature of film photography, from loading the film to processing and printing, brought me a profound sense of connection and fulfillment.
What made this project especially meaningful to me was the realization that film photography goes beyond just capturing an image; it’s an immersive experience that engages all the senses. The physicality of working with film and the ability to craft each print with my own hands added a level of intimacy and authenticity to my work that I found deeply rewarding.
This project reminded me of the rich history of photography and allowed me to pay homage to the pioneers who paved the way for the art form we know today. It also reinforced my belief in the importance of embracing different mediums and techniques to expand one’s artistic horizons.
Through this exploration of film photography, I not only gained technical skills but also developed a profound appreciation for the art of making images. It was a transformative journey that has influenced my approach to photography ever since. This project continues to be a reminder of the power and significance of the medium, and it drives me to continually seek meaningful connections and authentic storytelling through my work.

I am a Mexican American photographer who found my passion for the art form at a young age. Growing up in California, I was inspired by my father, who was always capturing moments with his camera, whether it was documenting our family or the Chicano lowrider scene that surrounded us. These early experiences ignited my curiosity and love for photography.
After graduating high school, I made the decision to join the Navy. Little did I know that this would become a pivotal chapter in my photographic career. During my time in the military, I embarked on a nine-month deployment on a guided missile cruiser, where I was appointed as the command photographer by the ship’s captain. It was my responsibility to document the daily life onboard the ship and the combat missions we were assigned. This experience taught me the importance of documentary photography, capturing genuine moments that reflect the reality and complexity of life.
Following my active duty service, I pursued higher education at the City College of New York, where I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography. It was during this period that my passion for film photography and darkroom printing deepened. I discovered the beauty and timelessness that can be achieved through this medium, allowing me to create images with a distinctive and captivating quality.
In my projects, I explore multiple themes, including fashion, beauty, and the intricate nature of the world around me. I am drawn to the interplay between light, shadow, and composition, seeking to create evocative and visually compelling images that tell stories and provoke emotions. My Mexican heritage is an integral part of my identity, and I frequently incorporate cultural and religious elements into my work, celebrating the richness of my roots and sharing the diversity of my experiences.
Beyond my personal artistic pursuits, I am dedicated to sharing my knowledge and love for photography with others. I have introduced close friends to the world of photography, and I have also had the privilege of working with the International Center of Photography, where I support teenagers from diverse backgrounds in using cameras to tell their own stories and contribute to social change. It brings me immense joy to witness the transformative power of photography and its ability to build communities and amplify voices.
Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work behind the scenes of prestigious events like New York Fashion Week and document notable CFDA fashion shows, including Markarian, Christian Siriano, Brandon Maxwell, and many more. These experiences have enriched my understanding of the fashion industry and further fueled my creativity.
Presently, I work full time as a studio photographer for The Webster, a renowned fashion retailer, while simultaneously running a media production company alongside my co-founder, Veronica Perez. Our company specializes in photography, documentary projects, and the authentic representation of our communities. Together, we strive to capture the essence of diverse stories, celebrate individuality, and contribute to a more inclusive and empowering visual narrative.
In summary, my artistic journey as a Latina photographer encompasses a deep passion for storytelling, a commitment to documentary photography, an exploration of film and darkroom techniques, and a dedication to sharing knowledge and uplifting communities. Through my work, I aim to evoke emotions, challenge perceptions, and contribute to the collective dialogue surrounding identity, culture, and the world we inhabit.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Leaving the military to embark on a career in the creative field marked a pivotal moment in my life—a significant shift from a highly structured environment to a completely different path. The transition was not without its challenges, and I faced numerous obstacles along the way. Many people doubted my decision, and their skepticism only fueled my determination to prove them wrong.
Having spent the past four years stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, the decision to leave behind the familiarity and move to New York City was both daunting and exciting. I knew that in order to pursue my education in Art and find work in a creative field, I had to be in a place that embraced the arts, diversity, and creativity—New York City seemed like the ideal destination.
The transition, however, was far from easy. I left behind the structured routines and clear objectives of military life to step into the unknown. It required immense courage to venture into a world where creativity, self-expression, and artistic vision took precedence. The shift challenged not only my external circumstances but also the deeply ingrained beliefs I carried as a result of my family’s immigrant background.
Growing up, the belief surrounding work was centered on survival, ensuring one’s basic needs were met. Shifting away from this mindset and embracing a career that allowed me to find a sense of peace and passion was a profound internal transformation. It required redefining the very definition of work, one that went beyond mere survival and instead focused on personal fulfillment and making a positive impact on the world.
The doubts and skepticism from others only intensified the difficulties I faced. However, this adversity ultimately served as a catalyst for my growth and determination. I recognized that in order to succeed in this new path, I had to be adamant in my commitment, persevere through the challenges, and prove to myself and those around me that I could excel in the creative field.
The journey was a process of self-discovery, both personally and artistically. While my goals were not initially crystal clear, my belief in the transformative power of art propelled me forward. I immersed myself in my photography education, absorbing knowledge, refining my skills, and seeking opportunities to collaborate with fellow artists.
Over time, my vision began to crystallize. I found my niche in photography, particularly drawn to the timeless allure of film and the artistry of darkroom printing. In my work, I aimed to capture the essence of beauty, diversity, and cultural heritage, incorporating elements that reflected my Mexican roots and immigrant upbringing.
Looking back, I am immensely grateful for the challenges I encountered during this pivotal period. They have shaped me into the resilient and tenacious individual I am today. The difficult transition from the military to the creative field taught me the importance of staying true to my passion, embracing uncertainty, and pushing beyond the boundaries of my upbringing.
Today, as a Mexican American artist, I am proud to have forged my own path, challenging societal expectations and following my creative calling. By shifting my perspective on work and finding fulfillment in what I do, I hope to inspire others to pursue their own passions and make a positive impact in their communities. My journey has taught me that with perseverance, self-belief, and the willingness to step into the unknown, transformations are possible
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the ability to express myself authentically and connect with others on a deep emotional level. As an artist, I have the privilege of translating my thoughts, experiences, and perspectives into visual imagery that resonates with viewers. This creative process allows me to communicate and evoke emotions, sparking conversations, and fostering a sense of shared understanding.
As a Mexican American artist, I recognize the importance of sharing our unique perspectives, narratives, and cultural heritage through art. Our voices bring diversity, depth, and richness to the creative landscape, allowing us to challenge stereotypes, break down barriers, and foster understanding.
Expressing myself through my work not only allows me to connect with others but also provides a platform for others with similar backgrounds to relate and find representation. It is a powerful tool to bridge gaps, spark conversations, and create a sense of belonging. By sharing my stories, struggles, and triumphs as a first-generation American, I aim to create empathy, inspire dialogue, and promote the appreciation of diverse cultural experiences.
