Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Vintage Macaroni And Bridget Rulz. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Vintage Macaroni and Bridget Rulz, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
We were fortunate enough to learn about podcasting by connecting with other creators. We learned about an intro to podcasting course taught by Rita Richa at our local university. Taking a course was definitely a great way to start! Connecting with other creators also sparked candid conversations about learning and best practices. The most essential skills for podcasting are honestly organization, structure, and vision. You need to have a level of discipline to be consistent in your approach to managing and producing your content. It is not as simple as “press record”. You need to make a schedule, connect with podcast guests, create outlines for the content you want to cover, and then edit the podcast. Marketing your podcast and getting the word out about your content may be the most work and it is something we are learning more about.
Vintage Macaroni and Bridget Rulz, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Our podcast is about retro anime. We watch old anime for the first time or revisit ones we haven’t seen in a long time and discuss it. I think the thing that sets us apart from others is we are millennial women in a predominately male fandom. Thankfully that is changing. We love introducing people to retro anime and creating new fans. One thing we are definitely proud of is staying true to ourselves and being genuinely who we are in all of this.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being a creative in this space has been rewarding and inspiring. Our goal is to help create an inclusive space for all our listeners. We hosted a retro anime movie night and our audience had a blast! After the show – one of the attendees thanked us for providing a space where they could be themselves and enjoy anime amongst others. When we grew up, anime was a niche subject and not considered “cool” at the time. Now, anime is more mainstream and we have the opportunity to provide space for our listeners to share our joy in experiencing retro anime.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Part of our creative journey throughout podcasting, is we realized our voices can have meaningful impact. When we first began our podcast, we were so nervous and afraid to occupy a space that is normally taken up by men. We were afraid we wouldn’t fit in. Luckily we were welcomed in the community and found an audience! We had to unlearn our negative self talk, realize we deserve to take up space and that people want to hear our thoughts and opinions. Part of the creative process is learning through your mistakes and gaining the confidence to celebrate who you are and what you are passionate about.
