We were lucky to catch up with Vinny Nguyen recently and have shared our conversation below.
Vinny , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Yes, I’m so grateful when I have an opportunity to have my own business in beauty industry. At this point of my life, I have not thought I would have a regular job because I have so much more to offer to the clients and seeing them so happy and feeling more beautiful after using our services gives me more motivated to keep working hard and harder everyday. Like other business owners, I have been asked “ How do you find a balance between works and you personal life or Do you think it’s worth it to work all the time”. Being a small business owner, you have to do many jobs as once like: accounting, social media marketing, recruiting, receptionist, or even janitor if you have to. At some point, I got so tired that I even doubted myself “are you happy? Is it worth it?”, but as soon as I see our clients checked out with smiles, some of them said “thank you for making such a beautiful and relax place, Fort Collins needs a spa like yours, or I feel so beautiful, my eyebrows look amazing thank you, or even can I book an appt for my bridal party in the next 2 months.” Immediately, all of those stress and tires were gone. Then I realized the clients’ satisfactions are my happiness and driven force to keep learning and overcome all those obstacles from running a business. Really, if you treat your business as raising a child, you have to invest to it with all of you, the reward it brings to you, won’t disappoint you. The rewards that I mentioned are not only finance, but only the non-physical values you deliver to clients, your employees, and your local community. Once you realize those, you won’t feel tired even you work 24/7 maybe. You will spread the positive energy to people around you, your clients, workers, and the most important is your family. You will figure out how to make time for your love ones or spend the quality time with your kids.
In the nutshell, as long as you see the non-physical values from your business that make you happy. Anything else will fall in place. Treating your business as raising a child, enjoying the moment when your business gets busier and busier everyday as seeing your kid slowly becoming a good person. You will be so happy and enjoy being an entrepreneur.
Vinny , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got 2 bachelor degrees: hospitality management in Vietnam and bio-chemical engineering here in USA from School Of Mines. At the beginning, I was not planning to choose Beauty Industry would be my career. While I was in school to pursuit the engineering degree, I started working in salon as a short term job due to the flexibility and less physical labor, so I could still focus on school and making money to pay bills. Slowly, I realized I love the beauty industry and found a lot of opportunities to grow. Summer 2018, I graduated from Mines, I turned down the engineering job offer, and decided to tried to run business myself. In a few years, I create my own brand RoyCé Spa, in Fort Collins, and planning to have 2 more locations in northern Colorado. RoyCé Spa is a new spa concept by combining nail care, lash services, permanent makeup, facials, and cosmetics Med spa. We want to create a one stop shop with high standards on quality and customer service.
With a large space and well decorated, we’re a good spot to host your parties up to 35 people as once. We offer complimentary drinks from non alcoholic to alcoholic.
As long as you give us a call, we will make your parties unforgettable and joyful with your friends and family
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson that I had to unlearn is “staying in your comfort zone”. When I was working for a spa in Fort Collins, people always said: “Don’t own a spa, it’s a lot of work, life is too short, etc.. all negative advices”. Or even when I graduated from Mines, people dropped the comments “why don’t you use your engineering degree?, or you wasted for 5 years in school and money to just running a nail place?”. Trust me, I received a lot of negative comments from people, but I believe in myself, I will create something different, I will make it my way. So I have RoyCé Spa like today
Can you talk to us about your experience with buying businesses?
Before RoyCé Spa, I bought the location “Timberline Nails and Lashes, on College Avenue, Fort Collins”. It was very difficult at the beginning, the shop was not taken care well enough: poor customer service, low quality of services, and so on, so it was one of the slowest nail shop in Fort Collins, but after 3 year running it and spent a lot of time to upgrade it, it was one of top three in Fort Collins at that time. Now we currently closed Timberline Nails and Lashes due to landlord’s constructions, we’re relocating it to different spot, it will be 2nd RoyCé in Fort Collins.
