Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Vinh Nguyen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Vinh, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
In the early months of 2010, I made a life-altering decision that would define my path from then on. After dedicating three years of my life to a corporate job at AT&T, I found myself at a crossroads. The role that once held promise had soured, leaving me deeply unsatisfied. The commission structures were shifting, and despite pouring my heart into the work and aspiring to an assistant manager position, it remained elusive.
In parallel, my love for photography was growing, and I was painstakingly building my portfolio. However, diving headfirst into a full-time photography career felt like a leap into the unknown—the clientele base was not yet stable. An unexpected turn of events at work pushed me into a difficult corner, forcing me to confront a choice: stay in my comfort zone or take the daunting leap towards my dreams. It was akin to jumping out of an airplane without a parachute, armed only with the conviction that my business had to take flight, even if the destination was unclear.
That risk, that terrifying plunge into uncertainty, turned out to be the most rewarding decision of my life. I’ve come to understand that true growth and transformation only happen when we shed the safety of our comfort zones. Through sheer determination, relentless hard work, and a deep love for my craft, I’ve thrived over the past 13 years, carving my niche as a creator in this vast artistic realm.
What makes this journey truly special is the intimate connections forged with clients, blossoming into friendships I never expected. Every day, I revel in the freedom to craft my own schedule, work on my terms, and savor precious moments with loved ones. The satisfaction of creating a life by my design and witnessing my income potential soar far beyond my previous corporate bounds is a sweet victory. While the path has been strewn with challenges, the rewards have surpassed every expectation.
Seeing my art find a place in clients’ homes and offices, becoming an integral part of their lives, is a blessing beyond words. These experiences validate my belief that the risk I took all those years ago was undeniably worth it. They fuel my desire to keep serving my community, immortalizing their most cherished memories through my lens. This, to me, is the most fulfilling aspect of my work—the ability to craft timeless moments, weaving stories that echo in the hearts of those I touch. As I continue on this remarkable journey, I am excited about the memories yet to be captured and the lives waiting to be touched through my artistry.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My vision for both my community and the world revolves around infusing joy, fostering genuine connections, and championing freedom, all through the unique lens of my passion for photography.
I firmly believe that the path to realizing one’s dreams requires relentless hard work and an unwavering commitment. It demands sacrificing immediate desires for the promise of long-term gratification. It’s essential not to allow anyone to belittle your aspirations or dissuade you from pursuing what you love. Instead, invest time in honing your craft, developing your skillset, and mastering interpersonal skills, for genuine connections can propel you forward in the entrepreneurial landscape.
In the journey towards your goals, you may not always see the entire path clearly, but taking that crucial first step is what matters most. Even if you find yourself in a job that doesn’t align with your passion, there’s always an opportunity to nurture your business on the side.
Just as I experienced, there comes a day when the call of your purpose becomes too strong to ignore. That’s the moment when you must metaphorically jump out of that airplane—leaving the safety of your comfort zone behind. Even without the parachute of familiarity, the foundation you’ve been diligently building will empower you to land firmly on your feet.
With time, momentum will build, and clients will begin to recognize your fervor and dedication, gravitating towards your unique offerings. But above all else, believing in yourself is the linchpin. Self-belief precedes anyone else’s confidence in you; it is the nucleus of every success story.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In the early stages of my photography business, I faced a formidable challenge—the dreaded slow season. It was a trial of resilience and faith, testing my determination to not quit when the going got tough.
During those months when the photography inquiries dwindled, I leaned heavily on my faith and the incredible network of people I had nurtured. I realized that developing new business connections was crucial to expanding my clientele, especially during the sluggish season.
The first year of my venture was, without a doubt, the most arduous. I vividly recall a bleak December, where rent seemed an insurmountable hurdle. It was during these trying times that I turned to my faith, spending moments on my knees, praying for a breakthrough. And miraculously, a lead came in on the day before Christmas—an unexpected blessing that provided the means to cover my expenses for the month.
That moment reinforced my belief that with determination and resilience, I could conquer any obstacle. I knew that if I could just reach the new year, a fresh start would set the ball rolling. As anticipated, the following year saw a remarkable shift. The struggle lessened as leads began to pour in, and I continued to make my presence felt within the community.
My brand had always revolved around cherishing people, treating them with kindness, and consistently going the extra mile. Even during the toughest moments, I persevered, pushing the limits to elevate my craft and differentiate my photographs from the competition.
Through unwavering determination, a steadfast belief in myself, and a commitment to exceeding expectations, I emerged from that challenging period stronger and more determined than ever. The resilience displayed during those slow months defined not only my journey but also solidified my passion for photography and the beautiful stories it enables me to capture.
How did you build your audience on social media?
When I was starting out in photography, I saw how social media, especially Instagram, was becoming a big deal. It was a great platform to showcase my work and connect with the community and beyond.
Using platforms like Facebook and Pinterest also helped me establish myself as a trusted photographer in the Bay Area. I realized that supporting others in their businesses, both locally and beyond, was crucial to getting support in return.
Engagement, or interacting with people genuinely, was key. Loving what I do and engaging with others helped me reach more people. As I grew, I wanted to give back to the community, which not only pleased my followers but also brought more attention to my business.
To keep my online presence lively, I learned not to hesitate to offer discounts or run contests. People enjoy winning things, and making it a fun experience increased their connection with my brand.
Treating everyone with respect and equality was essential. Some followers genuinely wanted to see me succeed, and I made sure to acknowledge and appreciate them.
As the years passed, my drive to improve and stay down-to-earth never faded. I continued to work on honing my photography skills, knowing that growth is a lifelong journey. This mindset shaped my approach and took my photography business to greater heights, earning a place in the hearts of both local and global audiences.
