We were lucky to catch up with VINCETOMS recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, VINCETOMS thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I just put out my first full body of music. 8 tracks, just enough to qualify as an album. The project is called “Saving My Heart” and its absolutely been the best experience of my life creatively. i’ve been making music officially for almost 3 years now, started off very terrible i have to be honest lol. the effort was there, and you could tell my voice would be effective if given the proper time and attention. slowly but surely i found myself in music, along with finding my voice. single after single, i and everyone else could tell this is something i wanted to conquer. song after song i felt myself getting better and better. everyone else could see that as well. i always knew a full project was a goal of mine though. singles are nice, but full projects are special because it takes you deeper into the mind of an artist, much further than a 3 min song can accomplish. but the hard part is gathering the right songs to not only compliment yourself, but compliment the message you’re trying to deliver. it took me about 8 months collectively to compile the songs on this project, plus a few songs i’ve been sitting on for a year. and they came together so beautifully. its been out almost a week and i can already tell how it’s changing my life. it instilled me with even more confidence, that this is something i can do forever. and people are starting to agree. this project is meaningful to me because i’ve had several drafts of potential projects but i just knew none of them were good enough to knock the socks of people like i wanted. none of the songs screamed “yea he’s gonna make it” until i released Saving My Heart. that’s when everything and everyone changed. for the better
VINCETOMS, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
well firstly my name is Vince. artistically i go by VINCETOMS. it uses my first name, and a shorter version of my last name, Thomas. i thought of it one day back when i was a sophomore or junior in high school sitting in my home room, with my friend who’s last name is also thomas. we were 2 teenagers trying to figure out cool short instagram names lol. ones that didn’t have numbers, underscores or anything like that. just clean and simple. thus “Vincetoms” was born. he opted to shorten his first name as well, he went with “adatoms” first name adam. thats still his instant handle as well to this day.
about my art, i’ve always been very creative as a child. i thought i wanted to be an engineer because i can draw and my family would call me a tech wiz. i could mentally figure things out very well, especially at that time considering how young i was. back in the day (early 2000s lol im not that old. i’ll be 23 august 30th) but in the days of disposable cameras i found my first love of photography. it was the ability to capture happy moments with a flick of a button that really made me fall in love with pictures. it completely immortalizes whatever it captures. something you can look at forever. its beautiful.
at my core i’ve always been a thinker, and if you ask me that’s all art is. the ability to think about something, then bring it to life in front of you. books are thoughts, paintings are thoughts, music is thoughts. ive always been fascinated with music though especially. it was the feeling it gave, the soundtrack of regular moments such as rides to school, music made feel like a scene in a movie. a forever memory. i didnt know i wanted to make it, because growing up i thought music was for people who had studios. i thought you had to know producers, and have the proper equipment. and back then, you kinda did. so i never went further than being a fan of music. it wasn’t until 2017 when i realized how accessible it was becoming to make music. i started listening to this guy XXXTENATCION who literally started off making hits on apple earphones. yea they weren’t the prettiest sounding songs, but nonetheless. they were songs. then i realized i too could do this. id start off with jingles in my voice memos, recording videos free styling over beats of already made songs. to finally finding my own beats, and writing songs. i’ve always had the ability to put words together, i just needed to get comfortable saying them in a way that would make people listen.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
i think society needs to take a step back and let people wonder more. too quick have i heard first hand, and from others, that dreams won’t come true. that dreams have to be realistic. or that dreams and art won’t pay bills. and sometimes for a period of time, they wont. but why let that be the end of your dream? you could be the next steve harvey, who was homeless for a period of time. you could be the first you. im not saying you HAVE to hit rock bottom to achieve your dream. but i wish society wouldn’t make people afraid to chase something that sounds unbelievable, imagine steve jobs, look at what his imagination created. look at how many people have iphones, macs, look at what happens when you give your life to your dream.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
i want to take care of my mom. my whole life shes sacrificed, basically everything just to make my happy. and still, i see her continue to give every ounce of her energy to doing what she can to keep our lives afloat. and as i turn more into a man, it drives me insane knowing i haven’t turned into something big enough to change her life like she changed mine. it pushes me to be better everyday. before i didnt even want to do music as a career, but lately i think i may have finally found my purpose. seeing how she reacts to my songs, seeing how proudly she shares my music , makes me very very happy
