We recently connected with Vincent Sung and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Vincent thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I think the key ingredient to learning anything is having the desire to learn it, and the repetition of doing it over and over again. That was definitely the case for me; I had a strong passion to model, so I kept doing it! I was lucky to have good mentors to guide me through my growth, otherwise a lot of time/money could have been wasted. I think the most essential skill to have as a model is your professionalism. As you build your network, you will get project request more and more frequently, it is important to recognize which projects are going to help you grow, and which ones will hinder your goals.
Vincent, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi! My name is Vincent Sung, most people know me as Vinny in the Fashion Industry due to my IG handel. I started my modeling career back in 2013 when I went to a Kansas City Fashion Week model casting on a whim. I made the model roster and was selected by a designer to walk in the show. Not long after my runway debut, I was signed by Manifest Talent, an all-male boutique modeling agency.
Manifest soon merged with my current local agency, Voices &, where I was able to develop my modeling skills through an array of jobs I was booked for. In 2020, I decided to expand my opportunities even more by signing with agencies outside of KC and am now represented by 6 agencies across the US.
I am a Fashion Model, but am open to all kinds of modeling. Some of my proudest work includes:
Nike-Plaza store grand opening campaign
Air Jordan/Gatorade-“Like Mike” campaign
ULAH-Fall Fashion 2021 billboard
IN Kansas City Magazine-September 2021 issue cover
SEON-“Never be alright” (Official Video)
NAPA AUTO PARTS- “taking back the jumpsuit” campaign
Intel-Intel Evo Ad
Got Milk?-a commercial featuring pro climber Kai Lightner
Patrón – “Patrón Summer x Diet Starts Monday” campaign
Oribe – New fragrance
Taco Bell/ESPN – College football commercial
Kornit Fashion Week LA 2021- Walk for designer Dreu Beckemberg and threeASFOUR
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I recognize that Asian men are often type-casted as the sidekick in Western advertising and hopes to challenge the way society views Asian men. My goal in modeling is to be a part of a change that puts Asian men in the spotlight!
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
My passion is in fashion/editorial modeling, but most of the modeling opportunities (especially ones that pays well) are commercial. So there was a pivot point in my career where I changed my look and portfolio to appeal to the commercial world.
