We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Vincent Salvati a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Vincent, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
My artistic journey began as a teenager when a high school art teacher encouraged me to make my first painting. His words inspired me, and I was immediately captivated by the limitless possibilities of color and form. Once I discovered painting, it had a strong emotional effect on me. It offered an unexpected outlet for self-expression.
What started as a hobby soon blossomed into a passion, and I dedicated myself to honing my skills. Yet, at that time, I didn’t envision art as a career. It wasn’t until the looming college decision that I recognized my passion as a viable path. This revelation shifted my perspective and fueled my determination to delve deeper into my art and its significance.
Over the next decade, I focused my practice on building a solid foundation. This journey included attending Pratt Institute, working as a textile designer, and ultimately earning a master’s degree in painting.
Vincent, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I specialize in abstraction, where I explore the depths of my imagination and translate my inner world onto the canvas. My work often incorporates bold colors, dynamic brushstrokes, and intricate layers. I strive to create pieces that evoke emotion and invite viewers to interpret them in their own unique way. Through my art, I hope to connect with others on a deeper level and inspire them to embrace their own creativity. I’ve been fortunate enough to exhibit my work in numerous galleries and museums. These experiences have allowed me to connect with other artists, art enthusiasts, and collectors. I’m constantly inspired by the diverse perspectives and artistic expressions I encounter.
My work comes from a very personal place. The dedication and honesty I give to each piece of art is what means the most to me. It’s a reflection of my psyche, a tangible expression of my inner world. Each stroke of the brush, each layer of color, is a piece of me, poured onto the canvas. I draw inspiration from the depths of my emotions, the complexities of human experience, and the beauty of the natural world. My art is a visual language, a way to communicate ideas and feelings that words cannot express. I strive to create pieces that resonate with viewers on a profound level, that evoke empathy, introspection, and wonder. It’s a privilege to be able to express myself in this way, to leave a lasting impression on the world.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My creative journey is driven by an insatiable curiosity to explore the boundless possibilities of color, form, and texture. I aim to evoke emotions and stimulate thought through abstract expression. By delving into the subconscious and translating those inner experiences onto the canvas, I hope to create works that resonate with viewers on a personal level. Each person interprets the work differently and often in ways I never imagined. That is one of the goals—for the viewer to bring their own personal history and add it to the story. I wish to evoke a sense of wonder, empathy, or inspiration. I aim to add beauty to this world.
Practically, exhibiting my art has always been a motivator. I want people to experience my creations, and while social media is great at growing an audience, there is something about viewing a work of art in person. Galleries and museums have given me that opportunity. Since my work has subtle details of surface and mark-making, I feel seeing it up close is essential.
On an even more personal level, my goal is to contribute to the rich tapestry of abstract art. The history of art is always with me as I work. The ghosts of the distinguished masters fill my studio. Each brushstroke I make is a dialogue with the past, a conversation with the artists who came before me. Their influence is woven into my work, shaping my style and inspiring my creativity. Yet, I also strive to forge my own path, to add my unique voice to the chorus of artistic expression. With every painting, I aim to push the boundaries of abstract art, to explore new territories, and to challenge conventional notions of beauty. I want to create works that provoke thought, evoke emotion, and leave a lasting impression. As I continue my artistic journey, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to be a part of this rich tradition. I am humbled by the legacy of those who came before me and inspired by the endless possibilities that lie ahead.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an abstract painter is the unparalleled freedom to explore the boundless realm of creativity. It’s a thrilling journey into the unknown, a chance to experiment with color, form, and texture without limitations. The process of translating inner thoughts and emotions onto the canvas is deeply fulfilling. Every brushstroke, every layer of paint, is a reflection of my inner self, a tangible manifestation of my inner world.
When a painting resonates with a viewer, it’s a profound connection that transcends words. It’s a privilege to share a piece of myself with the world. Knowing that my work is hanging on someone’s wall, inspiring them and bringing beauty to their life is very rewarding.
I strive for my art to evoke emotions, spark conversations, and challenge perceptions. If I can achieve this in any way, I consider it a success. It’s a testament to the power of art to connect us on a deeper level and to leave a lasting impact on the human experience. I believe that art has the power to transcend language and cultural barriers, connecting people on a universal level.
