We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Villainy Alternative Dance Studio. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Villainy below.
Hi Villainy, thanks for joining us today. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
Villainy started out as a space to rent for private lessons. The owners had a few students they had met via a previous studio that wanted to continue learning during the pandemic in a controlled atmosphere. From there, word of mouth grew and soon there was a demand for small group classes. We advertised on social media and were easily able to fill our intimate, small group classes and things just expanded from there! Now we are so lucky to be running multiple classes at at time with a team of professional, knowledgeable, and amazing staff!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We love helping clients Unleash their Power and uncover the bad@asses that they already are! We carefully scaffold our classes to keep them engaging and just challenging enough to keep the interest and dedication of our students. There is something for nearly everyone in our burlesque, aerial, chair dance, pole dance, and heels dance programs. And we love to have fun! Laughter and cheering are heard every night. We believe you can learn new things while having a great time and supporting others. In additional to learning skills, three times a year we have student showcases in which students take special classes to learn a choreography to perform for their friends, family, and classmates. There’s nothing like having a room full of people applaud your accomplishments! All of our instructors are also professional performers, so we have a special insight into that world if students decide they want to take their dancing in that direction.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
In addition to getting to know our students as individuals, we also check in with them if we haven’t seen them in awhile. We call or text if they miss a class they signed up for to make sure everything is alright. Villainy highlights our students who have joined Villainy with our Member Monday posts, which gives members the opportunity to share what they love about Villainy plus a picture of something they are proud of achieving in classes. Villainy offers student photo shoots multiple times a year and we take the best photo from each student and make a poster to hang in our lobby. This way our students can literally see themselves in the studio! Each year we celebrate Spirit Week around Halloween time. Students and Staff have a great time dressing up in the theme of the day. This year we even had a Halloween party where we decorated pumpkins, and did Tricks for Treats!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Being from Minnesota, there is an idea that we don’t want to bother people and we have needed to unlearn this in our business. People want to be checked on! They have thanked us for following up with them and seeing how they are doing. We have had several students reengage with the studio after they had life event that took them away because we took the time to follow up.
