We were lucky to catch up with Vikki Gladney recently and have shared our conversation below.
Vikki , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Wow, this is an easy question to answer. I imagine, as my business has grown, and decisions are made, I have taken some definite risks. Yet, the biggest risk and the first that comes to mind is stepping out with big faith to start my business.
I founded Natural Measures in 2020 after walking away from the stressors of a corporate level job, and opened my doors October 2020, during the pandemic no less.
To walk away from the security of my income and pursue ownership in the fitness industry was not only a risk, but it was also an uncertain risk and huge leap of faith.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
After undergoing emergency surgery in 2018, I made the decision to focus on improving my overall wellness. As my health improved, I gained a greater understanding of the biological benefits of fitness and nutrition.
After attending my first indoor cycling class, I discovered my love for Spinning. This form of indoor cycling provided me with the cardio and endurance needed to shed excess weight while also building muscle and strength. I quickly realized that becoming an instructor was my goal. One year later, I achieved my goal and became a Schwinn-certified spin coach with my local YMCA.
My passion for indoor cycling and fitness soon became an integral part of my daily routine. I began to research and develop my own business, and in June of 2020, I resigned from my corporate job to open the Natural Measures Cycling Studio. Since then, my business has grown rapidly and has made a substantial impact in the community. I continuously seek knowledge, resources, and information to help increase my brand’s footprint, and the customer growth and exposure have been tremendous.
As a mentor, I have helped other individuals become instructors, and my brand is known for its unique and creative approaches to typical workouts. I use my platform to help others overcome self-condemnation and limiting beliefs that are sometimes socially perpetuated. I have also been invited to speak on various platforms.
Natural Measures donates its physical and life coaching services to local Indianapolis charities, and as a survivor of domestic violence and other life traumas, I offer on-site fitness workshops to empower, encourage, and give back to women overcomers. My ultimate goal is to promote energy, enthusiasm, and a positive self-image. I believe that my story and experience can motivate others to tap into the best version of themselves.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The path to achieving growth is personal and requires investments in oneself. It’s very important to put in the effort and dedication to achieve one’s purpose. I used to underestimate my abilities and over-esteem those who achieved success. However, I realized that they were not fundamentally different from me. They invested in themselves, took necessary actions, and persevered to realize their vision. They worked hard, stayed committed, and believed in their goals.
To continue the path of growth it’s essential to stay faithful, set boundaries, be kind, show compassion to others, protect one’s peace of mind, and maintain a prayerful attitude. I make it a priority to take care of myself and refill my cup regularly so that I can continue to move forward.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I have overcome many adversities that are sometimes common among women, such as childhood trauma, physical assault, and domestic violence. These experiences led me to self-destructive behaviors, but through spiritual growth and the help of my village, I shifted in the right direction.
After several years and many lessons learned, the path of healing led me to enroll at Martin University and earn my bachelor’s degree in 2017. That experience greatly humbled me and opened my mind academically.
I began practicing public speaking, participating in Toastmasters, and taking any opportunity I could to speak publicly. I soon realized that I was living my testimony and needed to share it with others.
Through connecting the dots and discovering my talent for engaging and holding an audience, I combined my love for fashion and style to become an image coach. I embarked on a journey toward physical and nutritional fitness, which continues today.
My passion has inspired others, and I have found a creative way to encourage others through mind, body, and spirit. I can influence women survivors of domestic violence and other traumas with my story.
