We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Victoria Wyman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Victoria below.
Victoria, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry? Any stories or anecdotes that illustrate why this matters?
In Corporate America its starts off all about what school you graduated from and your degree level. The issue with that is that business is constantly changing and the people who have some of the answers are the newest generation. By the time a person graduates from a prestigious school and in debt up to their ears in student loans. Business has changed a multitude of times, and what you previously learned in school , no longer applies. The rules have changed and you now have to learn all over again before the system changes again. If businesses gave individuals within their company the opportunity to apply for positions that they are interested in rather then their scholastic achievements this may help business thrive in their current markets. I have noticed with myself that I had an interest in Advertising and Marketing, but didn’t have a degree in that profession so companies that I worked for didn’t take any of my suggestions into consideration which could have help the company in the long run.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Victoria Wyman and my husband Jim Wyman and I restarted Wyman Grading and Excavating Inc. in 2016. Wyman Grading and Excavating Inc. is an excavation company that specializes in Mountainside Excavation and Demolition in Scottsdale, Arizona. My husband and I decided to restart the company, due to the lack of advancement I was experiencing in the medical field. In order to advance in medicine you would need to go back to school, and that wasn’t something I wanted to do at the time. I decided to try out self employment and I am so glad that I did. Being Self employed has so many challenges, however if you are able to succeed its 1000x more rewarding then working for anyone.
What sets Wyman Grading and Excavating Inc. apart from our competitors is that we listen to our customers. If our customers have questions or concerns, we meet them at the jobsites and go step by step through the process and never leave without the customer feeling comfortable about our capabilities. We have incorporated drone footage and mini clips of our projects. This helps our customers understand the excavation process. Each project is completely different, but when we use specific terminology it helps the customer understand what needs to be done and how we an accomplish the end goal.
I am most proud of our growth in the six years of being in business. When we started Wyman Grading and Excavating Inc. it was just me and my husband. With hard work and determination we have an amazing business that I am so proud of. Our advertising strategy, has been a huge help in our our growth. We decided to listen to the current advertisement climate regarding click bait and it works very well. The construction industry is male dominated and we collaborate with influencers to create fun and aesthetically pleasing photos, mini clips, and commercials. We were having great feedback, so we launched wall calendars, desk calendars, and hard hat decals which were requested by our followers. We are looking to launch Merchandise in the near future.
What we want our potential clients to know, is that we are here to serve our customers in the best way that we can. We are having fun with every aspect of our business and excited to see where the future takes us.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
When you are working for anything you have to pay your dues. I believe that this is a universal rule in any business. When “God” feels like you paid enough in blood, sweat, and tears. Then everything will start aligning for you, but right before the miracle happens it gets really rocky and hard. Its a test to see if you really want your goal or not. Just stick it through and everything will work out. Do not give up!!!!
The current climate that I have seen and heard is the belief that there is an easy way to become successful. Unfortunately, there are NO SHORT CUTS. There is always someone out there working harder than you and you have to believe that and use that to keep pushing. Find new and creative ways to advertise, market, and brand yourself.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Wyman Grading and Excavating Inc. is successful because we have a team of highly skilled people. Our operators in the field have been performing mountainside excavation for over 30yrs. The service that we provide is at the top tier in our industry and we pride ourselves on our services. Our laborers receive on the job training and we have the availability of advancement to higher levels in the company. I believe that when there is a path for advancement, the employees will do what it takes to get there. All of our employees go over and beyond to make sure that the company is represented the very best. Our superintendents communicate directly with the builders and the operators to ensure property communication. When a builder/ home owner hasn’t completed a mountainside project before its important for our superintendents to effectively communicate what’s to be expected and the timeline of events that will happen during the project. Prior to the start of any of our projects the employees in the office are the ones making sure that we are keeping the projects coming in. They are constantly coming up with advertising/branding ideas. Updating our social media presents daily and making sure that we respond to customers right away. Without a good team, its impossible to be successful. Everyone in our company plays an active role in our success and we are grateful.
