We recently connected with Victoria Wilson and have shared our conversation below.
Victoria , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Wow, I can still hear my grandmother’s beautiful voice singing “This Little Light of Mine”. We would always sit in chairs on the back of her house, and she would instill so much wisdom in me as well as teach me songs. She would tap the chairs creating the most powerful beats of all and would sing the lyrics to songs over and over. “This Little Light of Mine” was one of my favorite songs because the lyrics state “I’m Gonna Let It Shine”, which brings me to the age of eleven years old. At this age, I was singing at various churches in my community, but my favorite place was and still is, my church, St. Paul M.B. Church in Edwards, MS. Under the leadership of the Late Rev. Eddie Lane, we were a small church but had a big heart. However, due to our small membership, we couldn’t afford our mortgage which put our church in financial jeopardy. We owed thousands of dollars and although we held many fundraisers, it just wasn’t enough. I did not want that happen as the church meant so much to me, and I believed that I could do something to help with my singing. So, I composed and produced along with our pianist Ms. Lola Sneed, my first gospel cassette tape entitled “When All God’s Children Get Together”. We sold thousands of copies, and all the proceeds went to the church which allowed the church to pay off its entire mortgage. At that very moment, I knew that God blessed me with a special talent, and my divine purpose was to serve and uplift my communities. When All God’s Children Get Together, Oh What A Time!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Music is my life and was instilled in me at the age of five years old. Obviously, in my musical performances, I am able to connect with people on a very deep personal level whether it’s singing classical music, gospel, musical theatre, etc. However, teaching is another way to share with others. I’m an extremely versatile performer so one day I may be singing in an opera or the next performing in a theatrical play. I’ve had the most rewarding performance experiences around the world. However, there’s an even greater satisfaction that I get from giving to others by sharing my talents and skills. We can’t survive on our own. We depend upon each other. God has allowed me to incorporate music in every aspect of my life. I am the owner of Daughter of Music, LLC in Atlanta, GA, and we provide private music lessons for voice, piano, guitar and drums to artists of all ages and levels of experience. In addition, I am an entertainment law paralegal and launched my own music business podcast, Note 2 Note, to help artists understand their rights and protections during their creative processes.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Haha, I am still learning and growing, but I am doing IT! Social media has so many algorithms that train our thoughts, feelings and motivations. All of the behaviors are shaped by powerful technology which is designed to keep us engaged. However, I would encourage anyone utilizing social media to know and understand your true core values as well people or things that may not be good for us, whether online or offline. We are bombarded with notifications all day, but we must prioritize what matters most in our lives. So, how did I build my audience? Stay tune, it’s happening!
