We were lucky to catch up with Victoria Rodriguez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Victoria, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
Ceramic 3D printing is often misunderstood or mischaracterized as a purely automated process. In reality, it is a very specific and constrained form of 3D printing that requires extensive design knowledge in order to produce successful prints. The clay itself imposes significant limitations on the design, which means that the process is much more similar to traditional ceramics than other forms of 3D printing. It is a long and complex process that involves refining the design, glazing the piece, firing it in a kiln, and then completing it with a final firing. This process can take weeks or even months to complete, and it requires the same amount of knowledge and manual artistry as traditional ceramics. As a result, ceramic 3D printing is not a quick or easy process, but it can produce truly stunning pieces.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Ceramica Studio was born out of the urge to experiment and create. We make ideas a reality with one-of-a kind ceramic pieces using traditional techniques mixed seamlessly alongside new innovative 3D technologies for incredible end results. The goal here at our studio in Silicon Valley isn’t just to make things that are functional; we want each design piece to be a unique work of art. We take pride in our passion for clay and design and enjoy being able to share our singular, minimal and beautiful creations with others. Each piece is individually handmade with care and attention to detail, using locally sourced materials. Our 3D printed and hand thrown vases, cups and bowls are all designed and manufactured in-house and finished with food safe glazes. They are microwave and dishwasher safe too. We believe in utilizing the latest technologies available to us in order to create truly innovative and utilitarian pieces that can be enjoyed by all. Visit us today to see our latest creations!

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For us, the most rewarding aspect of being artists is the opportunity to bring our ideas to life in a tangible form. Whether we’re hand throwing, 3D printing clay, or working with other media, we enjoy the challenge of bringing our vision to life. We also appreciate the opportunity to share our art with others and see their reactions. It’s gratifying to know that our art can touch people in a deep and meaningful way. As artists, we strive to push the boundaries of our medium and find new ways to express our imagination. We’re constantly searching for new ways to incorporate technology into our work and to find innovative ways to create art. For us, the journey is as rewarding as the destination.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Often, people think of creativity as motivationally driven; as something that requires a certain goal or mission. However, this is not accurate. For a true artist creativity is more like the air we breath; it is essential and ever-present. It is part of our DNA and we will always be creative regardless of circumstances and or access to resources. While motivation and necessity can influence the expression of our creativity, they do not determine whether or not we are creative. Instead, it is our essence; it is what defines us. It is inevitable.
