We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Victoria James. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Victoria below.
Victoria, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
I think the biggest thing my parents did right collectively was to push me past what I thought i could do and make me dig deeper. My dad in particular was always challenging me to step it up. I use to think it was a punishment when he inquired why i didn’t do better but now i just realize that was his version of tough love. For example, I would come home so happy about the B’s i made in school and he would go, “well why didn’t you make A’s?” I love that he kept me on my toes because if it wasn’t for him i don’t think that I would be as resilient. I think that the No’s I received in life would hold a different weight and the bounce back wouldn’t be as easy for me. My mom helped me to navigate my passion for writing and my love for books.
Victoria, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve always loved writing since I was a young girl and I have imagination for days, so it wasn’t long before I realized I was a storyteller and my audience was children. I love helping people as well and children are so impressionable, I believe it starts with them. So, I thought how I could incorporate my message into my stories, and I feel like I branched into a whole other category of writing, Inspirational fiction. It’s really about what we are feeding into the minds of the youth these days.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
You’re not going to always get it right the first time and you have to give yourself some grace. While i grew up trying to best the competition I think along the way I forgot how to be human. I’ve had to kind of re-learn that in my adult life and it’s been hard, but it’s also been rewarding in the sense that I can realize how I got here. I’ve really had to do some deep diving and it’s been really beneficial for my mental health as well. Grounding yourself in grace is the best gift you can give yourself.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The goal ultimately is to flood the market with good heart felt work and hopefully the readers can feel and experience the journey. I hope its relatable and that they can feel more understood and heard. I just want them to see my heart and know that someone cares about the outcome.
