We were lucky to catch up with Victoria Ivy Embers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Victoria Ivy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
In life, we’re often told that we need to choose one career path and stick to it. Growing up, I was constantly shut down when I spoke up about wanting to pursue more than one thing in the future. Oftentimes, many people who choose to pursue their creative hobbies don’t pursue an education or a more typical career path and visa versa. I am currently in college getting my pre med track done to become a future anaesthesiologist. However, I also have passions in pursuing writing, film, photography, and other creative fields. My whole life, I was always told to pursue one and not the other; that I couldn’t pursue a medical job and my hobbies. I chose to deviate from that standard. Life is too short to only pursue one thing. I’m currently triple majoring in a pre med degree and two degrees that will strengthen my writing skills and opportunities. I am in the woks of writing two novels. I do acting, directing, and filmmaking on the side, as well as travel and landscape photography. This summer, I released my first music single, and am releasing my second on November 17th. I also hope to start a business one day. I choose to pursue many paths instead of just one.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
At a young age, I always had in interest in creative passions. I began doing travel and landscape photography at the age of seven, and have been to various countries across North America and Europe. I’ve worked with brands such as Visit Faroe Islands and Google. I have always had a passion for literature and writing. At the age of five, I got my first work of writing published. I have been involved in theatre and film from a very young age, and have worked on several commercials, music videos, and small roles in films. I have only recently discovered my passions for the medical field and began writing music, mostly as an experiment, but there’s a starting point for everyone to discover who they truly are and what they want to pursue in life.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I knew that as long as you have passion and drive, almost anything is achievable. You can fail 100 times, but if you get up 101 times and keep going, you’ll reach your destination.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I began using social media at a very young age. Growing up, I was involved in photography and grew an audience on Tumblr. I ran an Instagram account which reached over 60K followers at one point, before deleting it and taking a break from social media. I recently began using Instagram on a new account again and have been posting more frequently since this summer. During 2020, I used TikTok and gained an audience on there. I’ve been gaining more of an audience from my Spotify most recently. If you want to build an audience on social media, my advice is to just be yourself and don’t worry about what anyone else thinks. Eventually you’ll find the right kind of audience who will love you for you.
