We were lucky to catch up with Victoria Holman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Victoria, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents are the ones that started my photography bug from a very young age. They always allowed me to explore new things, places and learn lessons, sometimes not in the easiest way. But all of that has allowed me to become the woman that I am today and I wouldn’t change a thing.
I started on a polaroid camera, storming around as a toddler snapping close ups and portraits of my parents. They have always been supportive of my creative side and have always allowed me the freedom to explore and create.
From there they continued to let me “borrow” their cameras to capture the everyday, my sister’s sport events, and all of our chaotic holidays.
In 2014 I started my first photography business and my parents bought me my first DSLR, a Canon Rebel. I started out with senior sessions and family portraits.
In 2016 I had the opportunity to live abroad in Scotland. I would have weekly calls with my parents with check-ins, talk about my plans for my blog posts and share all of the photos that I had taken.
After returning home I took those photos from Scotland and turned them into framed prints and cards. My parents opened up their backyard for my first and only photography show. They helped me spread the word, and work the show. I still remember how excited I was that day and how many people showed up to look at my art and purchase it!
After that show my clientele grew from senior and family sessions to weddings. My parents were right their sharing my work with others on social media and at there work.
I have the greatest support system in my parents and without them, I would not be where I am today.
Victoria, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Victoria Holman and I am the owner and head photographer/videographer of The Hol Idea Productions. My husband, Nicholas Holman is my second shooter and drone operator. We are located in Cambridge, MN and service the Midwest and beyond! A little history of myself and how The Hol Idea Productions came to be! In 2016, I added on a second shooting for weddings and grew into shooting weddings myself. This was a wonderful add on and I had so much fun working with these couples to capture one of the big moments in their lives.
I met my husband in 2017 and he became my second shooter. In 2020 my husband and I started The Hol Idea, as a play on our last name, Holman. Under this name we took on senior, anniversary and portrait sessions as well as engagement and wedding sessions. Focusing solely on photography.
It was hard to start over and even harder as the pandemic took over the world. I became very nostalgic during the pandemic. You didn’t always know what the next day held for you or your family. So I held on to photographs even more, as the memories frozen in time, capturing the emotions in a freeze frame.
Something else came into my life during this time and that was the motion of home videos. Not only capturing moments and memories in freeze frame but in real time. This inspired me so much that in 2022, The Hol Idea rebranded and became an LLC. We are now The Hol Idea Productions that offer both photography and videography services under lifestyle, elopement and wedding packages.
We are all here to make your photos look as natural as possible which means that I will give you direction that will lead to the natural action without feeling stiff and posey. Our inspiration is the raw, natural, and authentic moments during your session. We want you to be able to look back on these images and remember exactly what you felt. This means that you will be given a gallery that captures you, just as you are. We document your wedding day as it unfolds – with a photography and videography style that is authentic, candid, intimate, and natural.
We live for those authentic and intimate moments! We are also here for affordability on your wedding day. This is a day to celebrate you as a couple whether that be a large party or just you two and a couple of close friends. You want to look back on your day with happiness, laughter and fond memories and not the stress that it took to get there! I am here to help you build an itinerary, answer questions and capture the authentic and amazing you on your big day!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being able to capture and share peoples stories through photography and videography. Creating something that will be timeless and nostalgic.
I have the opportunity to meet new people who have become good friends. To feel comfortable enough to be wholly themselves and have that reflected in the photos.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My business partner is actually my husband! We met 6 years ago due to a mutual friend in Burnsville at JL Beers. I was hanging out with my friend and we were having dinner at JL Beers and he invited a group of friends to join us for a drink and then a movie. Nic (my future husband) was the only one who showed up.
We hit it off right away and fell into a rhythm with one another. As we got to know each other I found out that he was restoring a classic car (1969 Chevelle), he loved being outdoors, hiking and camping and that his mom was a wedding photographer and that he has a lot of experience working behind a camera. We actually figured out that I had gone to his cousins wedding , 2 years before officially meeting, and I was watching his mom take the photos for the wedding.
At that time I was shooting weddings and portraits by myself and was content doing so, but having a partner who was not only supportive but knew what he was doing with little to no direction was very helpful!
We got married in October of 2019 and in 2020 we started The Hol Idea with Nic as my full time second shooter.
