We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Victoria Galloway. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Victoria below.
Hi Victoria, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with something countless entrepreneurs have had to figure out on the fly – how have you dealt with the rise of remote work?
Since covid the majority of my work has been created remotely. At the start the loneliness of this was daunting but looking back on all the work that has been produced now, it’s amazing to think that this was created by me and one laptop. I took advantage of this opportunity and tried to travel and see as much of the world as I could. It sometimes meant taking meetings in the back of a campervan or getting the last bit of wifi at the airport but it has taught me a lot about what I am capable of.
There are always pitfalls to working alone, I miss the connection that meeting in person brings but I try my best to meet with clients and my company whenever possible. It has taught me discipline and how to create a routine no matter where I am.
Victoria, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an Irish graphic designer and illustrator. I studied design and illustration in Belfast but was in love with art and design from a young age. Somewhere Studio was born out of years of experience working in brand creation and creative direction in different countries. I founded a multi-disciplinary creative agency based in Ireland and working worldwide. Our goal is to elevate premium brands to a place of meaning and purpose.
I work closely with my clients as a design consultant and work with companies to identify how to elevate and grow their businesses. I like to focus on magic moments to help turn their ideas into reality. Experimentation and intuition are key to everything I create. I believe that branding is more than just a logo and I take pride in going above and beyond for my clients. I love working with brands that are bold and willing to make a change.
I am most proud of the voice that I have given myself when it comes to design. I feel that the hard work and creativity that I have presented to every person I work with has enabled me to gain their trust. Over the last few years, I have worked with some of Australia’s biggest brands, designed wallpapers for hotels across the world whilst also building my branding company Somewhere Studio.
The goal of anything that I create is that it displays passion, commitment and drives positive change. Whether I am designing a new website or creating a new logo I want to develop a deeper understanding of my creative intentions and how it can solve problems. My brand offers a unique balance of imagination, commercial understanding and level-headed focus. I hope people walk away with a message of hope and kindness after working with me. Global connections, feminism and topics such as migration are the muse to my brand. I believe that designing is something that you have to do for love, if you are passionate and committed first and foremost to producing good design then the opportunities will always come.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being creative is that I can help people bring their dreams and goals to life. Being able to see my work out there in the real world and making an impact makes it all worth it. It’s so rewarding to turn compelling stories and ideas into commercial success through the power of great branding and storytelling.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
I feel like it’s always best to lead with empathy. I am currently managing a team of 4 designers. Seeing the strength in each individual has made our team stronger than ever. There will always be a period when things are uncomfortable when I am discovering strengths and weaknesses but it’s worth the pain in the end when everyone starts to sync with each other.
I always wish to focus on collective success. Everyone is equal in my creative process which allows us to work towards our shared goals. No ego’s and don’t take things personally. Weekly catch-ups with an international team have been critical to keeping morale high.
