Victor, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
One of the biggest risk I have taken in my 8 year photography journey was taking the Jose Villa Workshop. I didn’t know what I was signing up for, all I knew was that it was the largest financial investment I had made at the time. A few months after making the deposit, I find myself in Guadalajara, Mexico, at the historic, Hacienda El Carmen. Surrounded by tons of talented film photographers. I felt completely out of place because I had never shot film and I can be an introvert at times. However, with a borrowed vintage Contax 645 in hand, and lots of encouragement from, Joel Serrato, I was determined to shoot film during the week entierly and soak in all the knowledge I could. Most of my first film photos were soft and underexposed but the experience I had taking them and getting out of my comfort zone was exhilarating. Also, I was beginning to connect with top wedding professionals, which I couldn’t have done so easily otherwise.
One day shortly after the workshop, I get a message from the one and only, Jose Villa. Asking if I was available and willing to help him on a wedding in Cornwall, England. I still remember the feeling I got the moment I read his message. It was as if everything that I have ever worked for and constantly betting on myself was finally paying off. I knew I was on the right path. Fast forward 6 years, I am grateful and honored to currently be part of the photography teams for Jose Villa and his husband, Joel Serrato-Villa, associate shooting all over the world with them. If I hadn’t taken the risk, gotten out of my comfort zone and bet on myself, I can truly say my life wouldn’t be the same.
Never be afraid to take risk and trust yourself.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My journey began 8 years ago in fashion school, where I developed a keen eye for natural and classic beauty. Combining that with my love of natural light, my photography culminates in romantic and soft editorial inspired imagery.
I am honored have worked alongside and been mentored by top wedding photographers in the industry, which gives me a rare experience and knowledge that I bring with me to every wedding day. I am confident in handling high pressure weddings with a calm personality, great smile, and poise behind the camera.
My camera has taken me on some amazing adventures, most recently the beaches of California and a hacienda in Central Mexico. Currently based in Georgia with a passport ready to travel to capture the next love story.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
It’s simple. Be genuine, grateful, resilient, learn from every job and never put your ego first. These basic principles will take you further than you imagine.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Consistency over time. Eventually, when it’s time to happen, it will happen.
