We recently connected with Victor Teran and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Victor thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
This is a great question. I am grateful, excited, and humbled to be a martial arts business owner. In my previous life sort of speak, I was in the Federal Law Enforcement field, where my duties were to serve and protect our American dignitaries, embassies, and foreign political figures. I have spent a total of 10.5 years in a combat zone; 6 of those months as a United States Marine in Iraq. The rest as a Blackwater/Triple Canopy operator, until becoming an agent-in-charge for the U.S. Diplomatic service.
Every day I wake up thankful for what I do today! I have built an amazing career with the U.S. Department of State, but to be able to give back and create a tight-night community, teach, and share life experiences is by far the best and most rewarding and humbling job there is.
I don’t wonder how it is to have a regular job, I have experienced a lot of it and had a tremendous career while always living on the edge. Although I have switched gears, being a martial arts instructor is an AWESOME job!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
International Taekwon-Do Academy was established in September 2013. As a school, we have reached many goals and continue to make a name for ourselves in our community. We are a competition school. We participate in local, regional, and State competitions to prepare ourselves for the U.S. Nationals.
Earlier this year, International Taekwon-Do Academy participated in the World Taekwon-Do and Colorado State Championship, bringing home several new champions back to Arvada.
We are proud of what we stand for. We are a community, a family, and a support system!
International Taekwon-Do Academy in Arvada teaches teamwork, hard work, responsibility, perseverance, life experiences, self-defense, self-worth and much more… We teach young students from 4 years old to 94.
As a martial arts school, it is not about punching and kicking, or “fighting”. It is about courtesy, integrity, self-control, discipline, and courage. Our goal as a school is to prepare future leaders of tomorrow!

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
If you don’t know what you are doing, building your social media audience can be hard.
To be honest with you, I really don’t pay too much attention to our social media network. We post and share training videos, free events, and informative information to our community. Regardless if they are following or not, posting any information can benefit someone for sure.
Someone out there might be looking for whatever it is you are offering, just post it. If they really want your services, it is easy to pick up that phone or email you for information.
We just let our hard work speak for itself. When people are ready to start training, they will have an idea of who to call!

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
There are so many martial arts disciplines to choose from. It is always good to try some free classes to see if they are a good fit for you.
Not all martial arts are the same. You just need to know what it is you want to get out of your training. The quality of the student depends on the school and instructor. When the instructor cares and dedicate their time to each student and their progress, parents will see the change. So, to say if I have a strategy, I really don’t. We just let our hard work speak for itself!
We focus on reality self-defense training, while building a strong foundation in the art. We grow our “clientele” by teaching a curriculum that will be beneficial to everyone. We teach hard work and teamwork, while promoting self-growth.
Quality over quantity!
A great school just wants great students who will put in the work and sweat equity on the mats. Focus takes a lot of hard work, time, and commitment. We just need to know what we want to gain from it. We cannot climb the mountain and enjoy the scenery, if we don’t take the first step.
