We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Victor Rendon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Victor, thanks for joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success starts with a desire to make something work. Success is not greedy, it is not prideful. Success is not only yours, and success is not owed. To be successful, in any circumstance, you need to possess a few skills. First, you need to understand the playing field and what you want to accomplish. Second, have you created the right team and do players recognize the stakes? Third, successful or not, be honest with yourself and others throughout the process.
The Beatitudes of Success:
– Be willing to work
– Be communicative
– Be driven towards an output
– Be willing to dedicate time
– Be willing to fail
– Be willing to trust yourself/others
When you are seeking to be successful at owning a business, hobby, interest, etc. Being successful is subjective for the most part. It is subject to you.
Victor, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Victor Rendon out of Mesa, Arizona. My wife, Amanda, and I started Space Launch in May of 2022. She has been a small business owner in the Valley for a few years. She owns and operates Charming Décor, LLC. We decided to start Space Launch as I turned the page to five years into the short term rental industry working for WanderJaunt and Sonder. I worked up the ladder at WanderJaunt and oversaw a few operations for the Phoenix team and moved to Sonder where I did the same. I felt that change needed to occur. I found comfort in building the companies that I worked for, and I decided that installations was the route we needed to pursue with starting a business.
I have collaborated with design teams for around the same length of time and have learned a ton from some great friends. We decided to make Space Launch with two main pillars.
Home Staging:
We perform in-person or remote consultations, and one room to all room stages. It is completely customizable.
Furniture Installations:
– Airbnb design & install
– Floor plans
– Furniture assembly
– TV mounting
– Artwork and drapery hanging
We also work with a lot of short term rental companies in the Phoenix Valley to help with their growth efforts.
Space Launch has a mission that is simple. We want your space to be launched to its destination. We work with all kinds of clients with a diverse list of needs.
So far, we are proud of what we have accomplished within the first year of starting a new company. We have what it takes to weather the storms of the industry and we will help you get through it too.
Any advice for managing a team?
Leading a team in our industry is hard work. It takes time, effort, and ownership. What I have experienced is that the people on your team are the most important part of your work. Are you engaging with them? Do they know you care? Do they see you trying to be the best leader out there? When I was a general manager at WanderJaunt, I oversaw the housekeeping, quality and maintenance, and installation team. These teams were comprised of roughly 40+ people with a few external vendor relationships. I spent an average of 2-3 hours a day building relationships. Of course we would discuss metrics, quality of output, ways forward, strategy, etc. We also discussed life, hardships, and what they needed help with. I was always able to get more output from a person after a meeting if I talked about what they wanted to become then just their performance at work. Our employees, are the future business owners of tomorrow. Sometimes managers have to bring that out of employees. This is how you create high morale. Everyone on the team knows that you are willing to do everything in your power to help them grow and at the same time help the business grow. Work together and not divided.
In short, to get high morale on a team starts with giving time to people not processes.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
There are a few factors that can play a role with building a reputation in an industry or market. For me it was investing time at two large players in the Phoenix market, WanderJaunt and Sonder. When you work at companies like these two, it creates opportunities. When I started the company, Space Launch, I sent out 60+ emails to short term rental companies offering my services and included that I had spent time at both of these companies. I have since removed the statement because I have enough reputation through Space Launch now.
However, I think many new business owners are hesitant to put it all on the table when reaching out to potential clients. Even though you worked at these large corporations in the past, you found out what worked and what didn’t at their expense. You have gained insights, strategies, and knowledge that will help propel your company and brand. Do not be afraid to state that you worked at previous companies and that your reputation is still growing.
I also firmly believe that reputation has a lot to do with integrity. Can clients trust you will do everything they hired you for and do it correctly? When a mistake is made, are you able to own up to it and fix it? This will build a great reputation or build a devastating reputation quickly.
