We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Victor Neves. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Victor below.
Victor, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
When I realized that through creation the possibilities were infinite, you can start from point 0 and reach the unknown, there are no limits. Creating allows you to share your worldview with others and, at the same time, puts you on a quest to find ways to improve this vision so that this message can increasingly be more positive.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Today, through my creations I try to convey my vision about how I perceive the world around me and this manifests itself in visual arts formats through my photography and filming, but the reason I got here involves another type of art. In 2013 I started to develop some independent ideas and then in 2014 I finally took a super important step that year by creating Nevs, a street fashion clothing brand with a high quality standard. Within a year the brand became very popular in my city and I started distributing it to several stores in the segment.
Whenever we think about clothes we have an idea of something very external, for others, for the eyes of others, and perhaps sometimes we forget our own experience with that piece or with our own comfort. Nevs was the opposite of that, I had a very strong idea that the users needed to come first and only then the world they inhabit. This raised the construction standard of all pieces to a level that left them incomparable with any other piece from another brand in stores in terms of quality, which made the brand well known not only for its minimalist design but also for its care with the inside of the pieces that always had special stitching, personalized labels and texts that I wrote myself.
A very important friend in this process called João Victor Czepak offered to help with the beginning of the brand. João also works with photography and filming and was willing to create content so that the brand could grow even further within the city. It was then that my interest in photography and filming began to emerge. Through João’s brilliant participation in the brand for a long time, all his teachings and my the need to create content, I started to venture a little into productions. Some people lent me some cameras and then I started studying and practicing photography. In a short time, in addition to designing and making clothes, I was already producing Editorials and Lookbooks for Nevs. It was then that a great feeling of freedom was born within me, as my creative possibilities had expanded even further and I began to have an even deeper relationship with what I could create and transmit to the world.
The brand existed for 5 years. 5 years where I was able to express myself and talk to my city in a fantastic way, but over the years things have changed inside my head and my view of the world, entrepreneurship and production of goods have been transforming. From the brand’s second year onwards, I began to learn more about knowledge related to sustainability and better ways of taking care of our planet and this directly reflected on the brand. I started implementing sustainable ideas into the project and little by little changing its ideology until the last year of the brand I came to the conclusion that if I really wanted to fight for a better planet with more sustainable consumption practices, it wouldn’t be by producing more clothes that I would change something.
So it was at that moment that I decided to live exclusively from what I could produce with my cameras and I also decided to move to Europe. Since I made this decision, one of the coolest projects I had the opportunity to create was a project called Social Nova, where with the help of the wonderful Claudina Mattar we directed around 60 artists and addressed topics about how to better care for people and the world and we used art to talk about it. This was a project where I challenged myself to photograph and film 100% with my cell phone, and I remember that at the time, 2019, this was something unusual and innovative for me due to the level and final quality of the productions.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Plato, Allan Kardec, Leonardo Boff, Epicurus. Everything about these guys is worth checking out
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I don’t even know if I think about it. I don’t think about the rewards of these things I do, I simply do them because it feels like the right thing to do. I believe that through art we can influence people’s lives, positively or negatively, this will depend on the intention of whoever executes it and if, whoever does it keeps a little kindness in their heart, the transformations that will happen around it will be positive.
