We recently connected with Victor Gurley Jr. and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Victor, thanks for joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success isn’t just about wealth or accolades; it’s about resilience, determination, and the unwavering belief in oneself, despite the challenges that life throws our way. For me, success isn’t just a destination; it’s a journey marked by trials and triumphs, setbacks and victories. My path to success has been paved with obstacles that could have easily derailed me, but instead, they became the stepping stones that propelled me forward.
To be successful, it takes courage—the courage to confront your fears, to embrace your vulnerabilities, and to stand tall in the face of adversity. It takes perseverance—the unwavering commitment to pursue your dreams, YOUR WAY, no matter the obstacles that lie in your path. And above all, it takes belief—the unshakeable belief in your own worth, your own potential, and the boundless possibilities that await you.
Success isn’t reserved for the privileged few; it’s a birthright. It’s a testament to the indomitable human spirit that resides within each of us. Always remember, your past does not define you, your struggles do not limit you, and you possess the power to write your own story. Embrace the challenges, celebrate the victories, and know that the greatest triumphs are often born from the darkest moments.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a 33 year old Nashville, TN native, full time father, and 2 time college dropout. As a serial entrepreneur and astute real estate investor, I’ve earned accolades that include being celebrated as one of the Top 10 Under 40 in Tampa Bay by Tampa Magazine in 2023. Beyond my business acumen, I am the visionary behind the influential lifestyle brand and movement, REAL (Rich Even After Losses), inspiring countless individuals to find wealth in resilience and triumph beyond challenges. My newest venture is authoring my first book, “Why Don’t We Ask Why?” which will be releasing in June 2024.
We’d appreciate any insights you can share with us about selling a business.
Yes, I’ve had the privilege of selling my landscaping company in 2022, a business that I built from scratch and scaled to a six-figure enterprise. Reflecting on this journey, there are several invaluable lessons that I believe could benefit entrepreneurs aspiring to sell their businesses one day.
First and foremost, the landscaping industry, like many manual labor sectors, presents unique challenges, particularly regarding employee retention. In an industry where physical labor is central, turnover can be high, making it crucial to foster a positive work environment, provide fair compensation, and offer opportunities for growth and advancement. Building a loyal and motivated team not only enhances productivity but also increases the overall value of the business when it comes time to sell.
Developing and implementing systems and processes, while delegating tasks, is fundamental to sustainable business growth. As entrepreneurs, we often fall into the trap of working in our businesses rather than on them. By establishing efficient workflows, documenting procedures, and empowering employees to take ownership of their roles, we create a foundation for scalability and expansion. Ultimately, a well-oiled machine not only increases operational efficiency but also enhances the appeal of the business to potential buyers.
Understanding the value of your time is another vital lesson I learned. As entrepreneurs, we often wear many hats, juggling multiple responsibilities and tasks. However, it’s essential to recognize that our time is a finite resource, and allocating it effectively is paramount to success. By prioritizing high-impact activities and delegating routine tasks to capable team members, we free ourselves to focus on strategic initiatives that drive growth and profitability.
Perhaps one of the most profound lessons I learned throughout this journey is the distinction between being a boss and being a leader. While a boss may wield authority and give orders, a true leader inspires, motivates, and empowers others to achieve their full potential. Cultivating a culture of trust, transparency, and collaboration fosters loyalty and commitment among team members, driving collective success and adding significant value to the business.
Selling a business is much more than a transaction, it’s a culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and strategic decision-making. By prioritizing employee retention, implementing systems, understanding the value of our time, and embracing authentic leadership, we not only maximize the value of our businesses but also leave a lasting legacy of entrepreneurship and impact.
