We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Victor Chrispin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Victor below.
Victor, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the best or worst investment you’ve made (either in terms of time or money)? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
The Best Investment in this Journey has been investing in me. As a servant leader I am always investing in others, however pursing the arts was an investment for me. Regardless of the financial contributions that I have contributed to my journey, investing in my dream means so much to me. This has been a very significant thing that has boosted my life. Taking responsibility for your my life. and living life without limits and fear has been something undoubtedly that has shaped every facet of my life.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Victor D. Chrispin Jr., a multi-talented, passionate, ambitious game changer for the world. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, I am no stranger to hard work nor hard times. I did not let my circumstances determine his future but instead let it be a fuel to strive for the apex of excellence in everything I do. In the field of the arts I am noted for my work with Yohannas Performing Arts Company, a company I started as a Senior in High School. To date, I have produced productions, plays, and recitals. Yohannas Performing Arts Company is a home for arts and culture, offering engaging opportunities and educational experiences to enrich, expand the life of our community, and expose participants in a myriad of artistic phenomenons. YPAC seeks to serve as a facility of development for one’s love of the performing arts and development of skills. We are committed to providing quality arts education in a safe and positive environment. We develop self- confidence, self-discipline, sportsmanship, enthusiasm and dedication through a level of teaching that challenges and inspires all participants. At YPAC, we believe in teaching through our own passion and dedication to the art. We believe that the arts is an integral part of human development. t is our vision to challenge, amaze, educate and empower artists and audiences with hopes to make our community a more conscious and compassionate community. Through our commitment, we will provide an artistic home for uprising artists. We focus on inclusion and diversity giving artists access and opportunity as we celebrate the essential power of the arts to illuminate our common humanity.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One lesson that I had to unlearn is that Men, especially Black Men, had a place in the arts. Growing up in Jacksonville, Florida to see a “black man” dancing was related to femininity and not promoted. You were taught at an early age that sports was the “guy” thing to do and if you looked like you were into the arts you were scolded. With that in my mind, I leaned towards sports and suppressed my thoughts on one day being on a stage in Broadway. I actually fell in love with basketball but secretly I always wanted to be on stage. However, I ended up hurting myself playing basketball and found my way back to the arts through that pain. It was then I realized that I was doing something I thought I loved and replacing it with what I really loved because of the toxic masculinity that was projected.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I focus on inclusion and diversity giving artists access and opportunity as we celebrate the essential power of the arts to illuminate our common humanity. There are many artists who would shy away from this arena because of how they look, their hidden disabilities, and various other reasons. However I try to provide a platform for all. All who believes in the power that’s inside of them and believe in the arts. That drives me everyday knowing that something I may do to boost their confidence and to expose them to something that may have never thought of doing.
