We recently connected with Vicky Thompson and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Vicky thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about the best boss, mentor, or leader you’ve ever worked with.
I have been blessed to have some amazing bosses in my lifetime. But the best boss I ever had was one of the first bosses I ever had. Hard work was drilled into me from a young age but it was Cathy English who nurtured that work ethic by recognizing and rewarding it. She expected the very best every day but she did so with compassion and evenhandedness. I have emulated some of her managerial qualities when conducting myself in every profession I have been a part of since our time together. She is a remarkable human being and has accomplished a lot in her life, inspiring so many along the way.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a nature and landscape photographer who sells prints of my work. I strive to find the beauty in each day and I try to share that beauty with others. Photography is all about capturing a specific moment in time. I endeavor to capture that moment and make others feel, see and possibly even smell what I was able to experience in that specific moment. Even the most mundane moments can have some beauty to them so I hope that I am able to provide that to the viewer.
I am most proud of using my photography to help others. I have started working with non-profits to provide my photographic prints to previously unhoused people who are being set up in housing. I hope that they can look at my photos hanging on their walls and feel a sense of “home.”
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media is a two-way street. You can’t expect users to engage with you if you don’t engage with them. I try to keep my social media presence as authentic as I am in real life.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
“Comparison is the thief of joy.” The biggest obstacle I had to overcome and unlearn was comparing myself to others. There will always be someone more talented than me, who is able to do more than me and generate more content than me. I have really found my own way by staying in my own lane. I am the only me that exists, so why not embrace that person, nurture that person, uplift that person?
