We were lucky to catch up with Vicky Li recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Vicky , thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I started making content after pandemic or during pandemic time. At first I didn’t plan to be a content creator, I was just watching too much TikTok and started making videos because I was bored at home. And suddenly Instagram introduced the new feature Reels and I just posted same video in both TikTok and Reels, and then one of my reels hits millions of views. But I didn’t have any plans or strategies on how to build my account, what content should I focus, etc. if i could go back, i definitely would have a plan for it, and it would be a totally different story now.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started as making contents of funny videos/ jokes about relationships, dating etc, now I’m more focusing on lifestyle, fashion, and beauty contents. But even my content is more about fashion and beauty, sometimes I would still add a bit of jokes into it, so the audience won’t be bored of just watching 20/30 seconds of another girl doing her makeup/skincare/outfits.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I would say emotional & mental depth required to consistently create contents. Sometimes you just out of ideas and it doesn’t matter how many times and effort you put into it, you’ll have idea blocks, self criticism. And also sometimes when you made a content that you thought would work but what resonates with one audience may fall flat with another, you’ll get exhausted of the unpredictable reality.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I would say the most rewarding aspect is definitely to have the ability share ideas, stories, lifestyle with everyone and also it’s a learning journey for me, because when you put your ideas/mind into a content, you would definitely be surprised how others perceive it, and you’ll learn from it, from how others engage your content, and that’s the best part of it: you’ll learn from your audience and you’ll learn from your mistakes or experience.
