We recently connected with Vicky Lamb and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Vicky thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
So I have two different clients I consider as my “first” customers. The first, first one found me through my sister in laws post on Something borrowed Something New’s Facebook group after I had made signage for her wedding. I made her this Coco inspired remember me sign for a table to remember those that could not be there the day of her wedding, it was something so special and near and dear to both our hearts since we both lost our dads before we got married and to make sure he was present there for her that day was an honor. So back to the client she saw the post and a picture of the sign and fell in love ,she reached out to me and also wanted to make a remembrance table at her wedding so we made some modifications for her color theme and added a Spanish quote which was beautiful and she tacked on one more sign for her photo booth, it was amazing! The other client I consider my first was the one who helped me find my niche and has been an inspiration and huge supporter since day one. I met her at the only pop up I ever vended at back in Jan 2022, she was also a vendor; Amour Propre. I was having fun but not making many sales at all, I had made myself what are now my most popular items, my “Scan ME” QR code signs and decided to walk around and talk to other vendors and show them what I could make for them as well. I ended up at Amour Propre’s booth and we chatted about our kids our busy life and made an awesome connection, I bought some soaps and she took my info, within a few days she ordered a sign, I was beyond the moon excited and then more orders came in and then she ordered another sign and then a large logo sign and honestly it where i truly think my success started. Thank you both :)

Vicky, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Vicky Lamb and I am the owner of Lambs Garage specializing in acrylic and wood signage for other businesses with some cool event decor thrown in. I am a mom of two and work full time as an Associate buyer in womens apparel. I’ve been a softball mom, cheer mom, gymnastics mom, soccer mom and currently a baseball mom and a mom to a teenager. I feel i’ve always had a creative soul,i remember making fun Alice and Wonderland themed posters in high school for our Senior assembly and dong so many different DIY’s throughout the years that naturally when it came to party planning for my kids I dove right it and made decor, center pieces invitations and everything else in between. I started my small business in 2021 after buying the laser machine I had my eyes on for years and it’s been a crazy ride so far, but I love it.What i am most proud of since starting this business is the example I am setting for my little ones and hopefully able to grow this business and pass it over to them

Have you ever had to pivot?
I’ve always been one to do things at my own pace and within my own timeline; the path to my career started while I was in high school so naturally college was put on the back burner as I exceled in the fashion industry, had babies and got married. I got to a point where i was ready for the next step in my career, so after turning 30 I decided it was time to go back to school. I had an 8 year old and a 3 year old at home, an Army vet husband also in college and a full time job I juggled all while attending CSULB, but with the support of my amazing husband and family I was a 2020 graduate. We all know what happened in 2020 and amid the pandemic I was able to score a position at my dream company, in the field i had just gotten my degree in, however it would require me to take a significant pay cut. After many conversations with the hubby we made it work knowing this was the foot in the door I needed and here we are almost 3 years laster, 2 promotions later and a small business. Had I not taken that leap of faith, made that pivot in my life an career I don’t think I would have had the time and opportunity to get my small business up and running when I did

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media, the bane of my existence as a millenial lol It’s a roller coaster ride to figure out what works and when you do have it figured out the algorythm changes lol When I first started my IG page I looked at my insights and follower count waay to often and only focused on the numbers not the actual people following me. When I finally pivoted and focused on who i was making content for and connecting I finally started to gain a following that is supportive and a mix of other great makers and those within the event community. My advice to others; find your niche and connect with your audience by showing your face and being uniquely you no matter what
