We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Vicky Khamvongsa a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Vicky, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How’s you first get into your field – what was your first job in this field?
My name is Vicky, and my journey as a massage therapist began at the age of 22 when I landed my first job at a chiropractic office. Prior to finding my passion in massage therapy, I had explored various fields, switching majors about three times. Initially, I pursued auto mechanics, then kinesiology, and even dabbled in fashion marketing. However, it was during my experiences in these diverse fields that I discovered my genuine enjoyment of helping people.
Working as a massage therapist at the chiropractic office allowed me to combine my passion for assisting others with my growing knowledge of body mechanics and anatomy. I found immense fulfillment in providing therapeutic touch and promoting wellness through the power of massage. It was a transformative experience, as I witnessed firsthand the positive impact I could have on people’s lives.
I was introduced to the office through an internship program and was offered a permanent position once I officially became certified. I had applied to various other medical offices and along spas around the time of my graduation but nothing offered the fast-paced environment that was available at the chiropractors office, seeing anywhere from 40-60 clients per day.
Working in a fast-paced environment challenged me to develop exceptional time management and organizational skills. The high volume of clients meant that I had to efficiently manage my schedule, ensuring that each person received the care and attention they deserved. This fast-paced setting sharpened my ability to work efficiently without compromising the quality of my treatments.
At the chiropractic office, I had the privilege of working alongside experienced chiropractors, gaining valuable insights into the field of musculoskeletal health. Collaborating with these professionals allowed me to expand my knowledge and understanding of the human body, particularly in relation to joint function and alignment. This knowledge proved invaluable as I tailored my massage techniques to address specific client needs and complement the chiropractic treatments.
The fast-paced nature of the office also exposed me to a diverse range of clients with various conditions and concerns. This exposure presented an opportunity for continuous learning and growth. With each client, I refined my ability to assess their needs, develop personalized treatment plans, and effectively communicate with them throughout the process. It was incredibly rewarding to witness the positive impact my massages had on their well-being, as I helped alleviate pain, reduce muscle tension, and promote overall relaxation.
Furthermore, working in a fast-paced environment taught me the importance of adaptability and flexibility. I became adept at quickly adjusting my techniques and approach based on the client’s feedback and preferences. This adaptability not only enhanced the quality of my services but also deepened the connection and trust I established with my clients.
My first job as a massage therapist not only solidified my career path but also ignited a lifelong passion for helping others. It shaped me into a compassionate and skilled practitioner, dedicated to enhancing the well-being of my clients. Today, I continue to pursue my passion, providing healing touch and promoting wellness through massage therapy.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As a seasoned massage therapist with a passion for providing specialized services tailored to the needs of my clients. With 10 years of experience in the industry, I bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to each session.
What sets me apart from traditional masseuses and spas is my personalized approach to each client’s session. Rather than following a general set routine, I focus on targeting problem areas and addressing specific concerns. By thoroughly assessing my clients’ needs, I can customize the treatment plan to provide maximum relief and restore balance to their bodies.
I am thrilled to have found my current office through my personal training at Fitness 100. Recognizing the potential, I approached the owner about renting out their spare room, thus establishing my own practice. This decision allows me to maintain a professional yet warm and inviting space where my clients can feel comfortable and receive the individualized attention they deserve.
My journey into the world of massage therapy led me to working in a gym, where I was surrounded by athletes seeking optimal performance and recovery. It was through this exposure that I recognized a growing demand for IASTM (Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization) techniques. Eager to meet this need, I immersed myself in the study and practice of IASTM, becoming proficient in this highly effective modality.
In addition to my specialization in IASTM, I take pride in offering extra services such as hot stone therapy and hot towel treatments at no additional charge. These luxurious add-ons enhance the overall massage experience, promoting deep relaxation and increased circulation.
One of the reasons I made the decision to become self-employed is because it allows me to create a flexible schedule that aligns perfectly with my responsibilities as a mother. Balancing the demands of raising two daughters while pursuing my passion for massage therapy is a source of great pride for me.
I believe in the power of healing touch and have dedicated myself to helping clients achieve their wellness goals. Whether you’re an athlete seeking enhanced performance, someone recovering from an injury, or simply in need of relaxation, I am here to provide you with a customized massage experience that caters to your unique needs. I invite you to join me on this journey towards improved well-being, and I look forward to assisting you on your path to optimal health.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
In addition to training and knowledge, success in the massage therapy field is a combination of experience, skills, professionalism, and self-care. A focus on skill development can set someone apart from others. Effective communication , active listening and empathy can help you understand their needs and provide a personalized experience. Maintaining a high level of professionalism which includes being punctual, respecting client boundaries, maintaining confidentiality, and adhering to ethical standards. Understanding the basics of running a business and maintaining regular self-care practices such as exercise, proper rest and stress management.
Continuously investing in personal and professional growth contributes to long-term success.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I found myself faced with a life-altering decision on Christmas Day 2021. In a heartbreaking turn of events, my husband’s violent act of slamming my head on a table in front of our young daughter shattered the sanctity of our home. Determined to protect myself and my children, I took immediate action.
The incident was reported to the police, and I obtained a restraining order to ensure our safety. Despite the emotional turmoil and the immense challenges faced, I summoned the strength to file for divorce on Valentine’s Day 2022.
Recognizing the importance of healing and emotional well-being, I embarked on a journey of therapy and self-discovery. With a little over a year in therapy including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
Leaving and healing from a domestically abusive relationship can indeed foster empathy and benefits toward being a massage therapist. Through my own experiences, I have gained a deep understanding of the emotional and physical pain that others may be enduring. This enables me to approach clients with heightened sensitivity, compassion, and a non-judgmental attitude.
My personal journey helps me connect on a deeper level with my clients who may have experienced trauma or are struggling with their own emotional well-being. My empathy has created a safe and supportive space for clients to relax, heal, and trust in my therapeutic touch.
