We were lucky to catch up with Vicente Magana recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Vicente thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
At Motivo, we’re faced with a variety of challenges from different industries and scales, each bringing its own significance and unique lessons. Working on everything from e-VTOLs to broccoli transplanters and autonomous-electric tractors not only sharpens our technical skills but also strengthens our team.
Each project presents distinct technical challenges and human-interaction needs, pushing us to consider different perspectives and brainstorm alternative solutions. Motivo’s unique approach thrives in a company culture where everyone’s voice is heard, fostering collaboration and innovative problem-solving. This inclusive environment helps us continuously adapt and excel with every new challenge.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an industrial designer dedicated to simplifying and refining product designs. I focus on eliminating unnecessary features and requirements (ones we may assume are necessary), and my goal is to lower or eliminate barriers to entry, affording more people to develop their ideas.
I got into industrial design because I have always been passionate about creating solutions that make everyday life easier and more accessible. My journey began with a fascination for how things work and a desire to improve them. This curiosity led me to study industrial design at ArtCenter, where I discovered my knack for identifying and removing redundancies in product design.
At my core, I provide design services that range from conceptual development to final product design, engineering, prototyping and tailored manufacturing. I work on a variety of products, including consumer electronics, household items, and a wide variety of mobility/transportation solutions. The problems I solve for my clients typically involve streamlining/refining their product concepts to ensure they are as efficient and user-centric as possible. This often means cutting out unnecessary features that complicate the user experience or drive up costs without adding value. Our REAL product is, hopefully, a product developing experience that gives them the confidence to develop future ideas.
What sets me apart is my relentless focus on accessibility and simplicity. One of the things I am most proud of is my ability to help clients bring innovative and inclusive products to market. Seeing an idea evolve from a sketch on paper to a product that people use, and love, is incredibly rewarding. I believe that great design should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or resources. By eliminating barriers to entry, I help more people turn their ideas into reality. I also prioritize sustainability in my designs, ensuring that the products we create are not only functional but consider, and are designed to, their full life-cycle.
The main thing I want potential clients and followers to know about my work is that I am committed to making design accessible to everyone. Whether you are a seasoned entrepreneur or a first-time inventor, I am here to help you refine your ideas and create products that are both practical and impactful. My brand is built on the principles of simplicity, accessibility, and sustainability, and I look forward to collaborating with you to bring your vision to life.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Looking back on my creative journey, I wish I had spent more time interacting with others and asking for tips instead of taking it all on myself. Connecting with online communities, and seeking mentorship would have provided invaluable insights and support early on. Workshops and webinars, both online and in-person, are fantastic for learning new skills and meeting other creatives. Local design groups and meetups, as well as engaging on social media, could have opened up new opportunities and collaborations early on. Joining professional associations would have made my journey more enriching and enjoyable. If I could go back, I’d definitely seek out these resources and connections sooner.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is to decentralize and democratize design, providing you with the tools and guidance you need to bring your ideas to life. Whether you have a spark of inspiration or a well-formed vision, I am here to help you navigate the journey from concept to creation. I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to see their ideas come to fruition, regardless of their background or experience.
By breaking down barriers and making design resources accessible to all, I aim to create an inclusive community where creativity thrives. I offer the support, knowledge, and platforms you need to develop your ideas into something tangible. Together, we can transform your dreams into reality, empowering you to make a meaningful impact with your unique vision.
